Will Loconto
(Infernal Master of Noise)
04-25-1997

Daikatana Cabana What's your background in music? What got you started and how did you get your job at Ion Storm?
Will I've been involved in music for most of my life. Most recently I was touring with the band Information Society, playing keyboards and drum pads and doing background vocals since 1992. Before that I was the lead singer/songwriter for T42. We released an album with Columbia Records called Intruder. When I heard about Ion Storm starting up, I contacted John Romero and told him that as a rabid game player, I'd love to be involved in the new company. I sent him a tape of some of my songs, did a request for Tom Hall and then got the job.

Daikatana Cabana What kind of music do you do you listen to in your free time? Any favorite bands?
Will I like both kinds of music, Country AND Western...uhh actually I like different styles of music, I listen to Stabbing Westward, Chemical Brothers, Think Tank, Enya, Marilyn Manson, Jean Michel Jarre, basically anything except Country music, Michael Bolton, or Mariah Carey.

Daikatana Cabana Do you have any favorite axes?
Will Whatever I am using at the time. I go through phases where my favorites change.

Daikatana Cabana What are some of the unique challenges in writing music for a game in development as opposed to scoring a film that's already "in the can"?
Will The biggest challenge is trying to score something I haven't even been able to see. The level designers here are great about showing me what they are working on, so that helps a lot. They are also very interested in the music for their levels so it's become a very interactive process. I also believe that being here throughout the development of the game will make the music better and more of an integral piece of the final game.

Daikatana Cabana What do you think about the artist formerly known as Prince?
Will He's a talented songwriter that releases way too many songs that should never have been.

Daikatana Cabana Do you have any idea how many tracks will be included with Daikatana? Will each level have it's own track or it be like Quake where 10 or 11 tracks are distributed over different levels.
Will The goal is to have a unique song for every level, so I can safely say there will be over 30 songs.

Daikatana Cabana Trent Reznor's music for Quake was more or less ambient sounds to compliment the dark dungeons and not distract the player. In contrast the music for Scourge of Armagon had more of a rock-n-roll feel to it and the music for Dissolution of Eternity was just kind of whack. What kind of direction will the music for Daikatana take?
Will Since the game takes place in different time periods, each time period will have its own style of music. So expect an interesting variety in the styles of music. And expect songs, not just ambient sounds.

Daikatana Cabana Do you play much Quake? How are your deathmatch skills compared to Romero and Shadow?
Will I try to play Quake every day, but my skills pale in comparison to them. I am getting better though. Just started playing Quakeworld at home. My name is "Eggplant" so if you see me on, let me kill you.

Daikatana Cabana What do you think about the Spice Girls?
Will I really, really try not to.
