Reds character pleases manager Little

BRIAN LITTLE praised the character of his Wrexham side for getting something out of Saturday's match against Ebbsfleet United at The Racecourse.
For the seventh time in nine Blue Square Premier outings this term, Wrexham conceded the opening goal but the Reds hit back with three of their own before Ebbsfleet reduced the deficit in injury time.

And Little, who admitted he could not wait for the final whistle when Ebbsfleet pulled it back to 3-2 late on, was delighted with the response from his team after trailing.

"We planned in the first 10-15 minutes to play a bit longer, and to try and put them under pressure – to concentrate on not going a goal behind – but we did, so we were under pressure again," said Little. "When you go behind you think 'here we go again', but good character was shown.

"I felt the commitment and desire to get something out of the game was great.

"Thankfully we got the breakthrough. If you look at York and Cambridge we had opportunities to break back but just missed them.

"I don't think our attitude is questionable. We struggled last weekend but we are trying our best.

"Ultimately it was a great result for us, that was the most important thing."

Victory came after successive defeats, against Burton Albion and Cambridge United, leaving Wrexham eighth in the table, and in the aftermath of the poor performance at Cambridge in the previous outing, Little admitted it had been a difficult week but said the desire to win matches is always there.

"We have been on edge all week, and I think people have been on edge with us," said Little. "I think people were expecting lots of things and in four days of football last week we let ourselves down.

"We have been well and truly told that is the case, and we have probably told ourselves that as well, so we were always going to be a bit nervous today.

"We have all felt a little bit under pressure and we all know we did things a bit wrong last week, myself included.

"It was not an easy team to pick but we felt one or two who did not play so well last week probably had more in their locker and needed to go out there again.

"People have got to accept that the lads we have are good lads. They are trying. We make the odd mistake but we are trying our best to win matches, which is something the club hasn't done for a few years now."

Little was disappointed with the reaction of one supporter when Wrexham found themselves trailing in the first half.

"I had one fan giving me a load of grief and I just said to him, 'come on, you're a fan, help us,' said Little.

"He was more or less throwing his season ticket book at me which was really disappointing to be honest.

"I don't know whether I deserve that but I just think if you are a fan of your football club you support them.

"We have a bit of a dig at each other in those situations so I just hope he is okay.

"If he is around and wants to pop into the ground this week I am willing to shake his hand and hopefully get on with it again."

Jefferson Louis struck twice to take his tally to the season to seven goals, while Nat Brown scored the third – his first for Wrexham – from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the area.

Louis, forced off with a hamstring injury, joined Neil Taylor on the sidelines after he was taken off at half-time with concussion.

Taylor's replacement was Michael Proctor and Little was delighted with how the transfer-listed striker performed.

"Jeff tweaked his hamstring a bit so it was a difficult one whether to leave him on but once he scored his second it was always just a matter of time when to bring him off and to rest him for next week," said Little.

"Our team has some deficiencies but Jeff has got seven goals. If I was a gambling man you would think he would get 20 this season which is a great number for any striker. If Jeff does that fantastic.

"Michael Proctor has done a great job for us on the left side. It shows despite whatever problems he has had he is willing to work for the team so I was pleased with that."

Little also praised Steve Evans who was back playing for Wrexham after a substitute appearance for Wales in their World Cup qualifier defeat in Russia on Wednesday.

"I was watching it and when Steve came on, I actually felt really chuffed which is good. You can't help it," added Little.

"It is a fantastic achievement for him but we always knew Steve would come back and roll his sleeves up, and get out there again.

"Steve had done really well. He and Darran Kempson are very strong together, though we need Nat Brown in there for a bit of competition as well."
