Wrexham's Mike Williams today spoke about the adulation surrounding the Wales under 21 camp following their qualification for the UEFA Championships play-offs.
After beating Romania 3-0 in Iasi, Wales topped Group Ten, only the second time a Welsh side of any age has topped a qualifying group in a major campaign.

"I don't think it has sunk in yet what we have achieved," declared Williams.

"The lads are over the moon and Brian Flynn is walking round really happy.

"It has been a while since a Wales under 21 side has achieved something like this and that makes it all the more special.

"We can't get carried away though, because winning the group is only a job half done. We know we are definitely in the play-offs and that is a relief to know, but nothing has been achieved in terms of qualification.

"We will find out soon enough who we have drawn in the play-offs and then take our preparation from there.

You look at the sides left in the competition and there are still no easy games, I don't think you would like to play any of them.

"We need to take the mentality we had in the France and Romania matches to the play-offs, we weren't overawed by them and they are two very good teams that we have beaten.

"It sends out a message to the rest of the teams that we can cope against the big boys and everyone is looking forward to the next two games."

Defender Williams gave an insight into the team spirit in and around the under 21 camp at the present time.

He said: "It shows the strength in-depth that Welsh football has at the moment that we have achieved this without a few of the lads from the senior squad."

"With the team, anyone who comes in fits in straight away, whether that be for one game or the whole campaign.

"It was always going to be more difficult without the likes of Gareth Bale, Ched, Sam and Dave Edwards, but the team spirit is brilliant.

"All the lads must take credit, whether they are currently in the senior squad, still in the under 21s or injured because they have all played their part.

"It is a credit to the players that so many people have been called upon suddenly to do a job, and they have done it successfully.

"Even when you are on the bench, you are sitting waiting for your chance rather than thinking you have no chance.

"I had to come on suddenly and do a job for the team.

"It is strange thinking you are on the bench and then 15 minutes later you are in the action. That is where the unity comes in, we are all willing to do anything for each other.

"Even on the bench you feel a part of the match, because if you are required you need to put a shift in.

Williams continued by admitting that all Welsh eyes will be glued to the draw for the play-offs when they are made tomorrow.

"We will all be having a close look at the draw," he said.

"Once we know the opposition it is then all about getting games under our belts and making sure we are all in contention for the squad.

"Players will be back from injury, so that will make us stronger, and if some of the lads end up back in the senior squad then we know we can cope.

"There is so much talent in the squad, that although you are always going to miss players like Gareth and Dave, there are others who come in and do just as well.

"Between now and the games, I am sure every single Welsh under 21 player will be trying their utmost to stay fit and be ready in case they are called up by Brian."

Williams, would have been available for Wrexham's match against Cambridge last weekend before flying to Romania, but didn't make Brian Little's squad.

But now he aims to stake a claim in a Reds side that have lost their last two games: "I am desperate to play week in, week out," he said. "It is a strange feeling waking up on a Saturday morning and not preparing for a game. It is even more difficult to take considering the amount of games I have played in the last few years.

"Unfortunately at the moment the gaffer makes the decisions and I am not in his current thoughts. I will keep my head down and work hard for the chance to impress.

"The reserves are there to keep match fitness up and there will hopefully be some coming up, but at the moment every time I go away with the under 21s we have a friendly and I miss that as well!

"It's a tough time, because on the one hand I am really happy about Wales, but on the other I really want to get back in the Wrexham squad.

"I will be 22 next month and I know I need to knuckle down and fight for my place."

With Wrexham sitting in the bottom half of the Blue Square Premier, Williams spoke about the need for consistency.

"It has been up and down this season," he added. "We have been getting good results and then poor results the week after. We all knew the league would be tough and even the part-time teams are difficult to play against.

"We are all looking to climb the table, because mid table is not good enough for Wrexham Football Club."

- Wrexham youngsters are involved in FA Youth Cup action tonight when they travel to Stalybridge. Kick off is 7pm and admision is £2.
