After AD 410 Britain was no longer part of the Roman empire, and Londinium was abandoned. In the 600s the Saxon town of Lundenwic sprang up on a new site, around Covent Garden.

Until now, archaeologists have believed there was no direct link between Roman Londinium and Saxon Lundenwic. The St Martin-in-the-Fields dig has made them change their minds.
