High maternal mortality rates remain a critical problem in many parts of the world. The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, has released a report on the more than half a million women who die each year from childbirth or pregnancy.

The State of the World's Children 2009 says most of the deaths are preventable through basic healthcare.
