BRISBANE Lions vice-captain Jed Adcock says new coach Michael Voss has brought a "fresh" approach to coaching after Leigh Matthews' 10 years in charge.

Voss was appointed after Matthews stepped down last year and Adcock said the "structures and systems in place" under the former Brownlow medallist were "a fair bit different" to last season.

"With Vossy as new coach — fresh out of the game and working with the AIS — he's fresh with the style of play from other teams," Adcock told radio station SEN yesterday.

"He's also brought a lot from what he learnt from Leigh, so probably a bit of a mixture."

Voss captained the Lions to three flags under Matthews. After Voss retired, Matthews favoured a system of co-captains.

Adcock, who made his debut in 2004, has been named as the club's only vice-captain this year under sole captain Jonathan Brown.

"To be vice-captain is a huge surprise, but I guess it shows a little bit of hard work goes a long way," Adcock said.

"It's a huge honour (and) especially to be looked at that way when a new coach comes in."

The 23-year-old, from Maryborough in central Victoria, switched between the midfield and defence under Matthews. Under Voss he expects to spend more time in the midfield.

"I'm training as a midfielder, but as long as you've got a midfield background you can always go back — the running is not as hard playing defence as the midfield," he said.

"The indication (from Voss) is maybe start midfield, but there's a huge possibility I'll play defence at some time during the year."

Taken with pick 33 in the 2003 national draft, Adcock had a horror run with injury in 2006 before finishing runner-up in the club's best and fairest in 2007.

The former Rising Star nominee said recruit Daniel Rich, pick seven in last year's national draft, had settled in well at Brisbane.

"Daniel Rich looks like he'll be playing a few games this year.

"He's got a fantastic left foot coming out of the midfield, he can play in and under, but break away from the contest and deliver, which is good."

Ruckman Matthew Leuenburger was struck down with injuries last season. This summer he's bulked up and increased his training.

"You'll notice he's put on a fair bit of weight," Adcock said. "That's the main goal for ruckmen when they come into the system and he's looking good."
