THE Brisbane Lions have suspended third-year player Albert Proud after confirming the tyro midfielder was charged with assault over the weekend.

Proud was involved in a glass-throwing incident in which a female patron was injured at a Gold Coast bar on Saturday. The Lions said in a statement that they viewed the matter as "extremely seriously".

The development is another unwelcome pre-season distraction for the Lions, who recently fined Proud's teammate and close friend Rhan Hooper $40,000 for repeated breaches of club rules.

Proud has been axed from the Indigenous All-Stars squad pending a club investigation and his career, along with that of Hooper, is under a severe cloud.

The club said Proud was co-operating with police and "deeply regrets" his involvement.
