| The world observed World AIDS Day on December 1. As 2006 draws near a close, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization report the world AIDS epidemic continues to grow, with an estimated 39.5 million people living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. While some countries are seeing a resurgence, others are experiencing a decline. Data show HIV prevention programs get the best results when focused on people most at risk, and adapted to changing national epidemics.
