The U.S. Labor Department says the economy lost nearly 600,000 jobs in January, bringing the nation's unemployment rate to a 16-year high of 7.6 percent.  

Late Friday, the Democratic majority in the US Senate and some Republicans reached a compromise on a huge stimulus package for the battered US economy.
