I'm Sure He is "Pleased"

I'm watching Harry Reid on C-SPAN--no I didn't doze off--talk about the stimulus bill and he said he spoke with the Governor of Maryland, and said that O'Malley is "pleased" with the current state of the stimulus bill.

I'm sure O'Malley is pleased. Any stimulus will relieve him of making any tough choices about the state budget. Which is kind of ironic for a politician who sang, I mean literally sang "to govern to choose."

The O'Malley Bailout will only encourage more irresponsible spending from the Democrats in the General Assembly.

Oh and Max Baucus is now praising John Maynard Keynes and stating that Mises, Hayek, Hazlitt, and Friedman are quote on the fringe unquote.

The Other McCain has the only sensible response to such economic ignorance.

Brining Annapolis Together

At least we now know the one thing that will united Democrats and Republicans in Annapolis is Facebook.

Of all of the more ridiculous decisions that have been made by Annapolis Bureaucrats over the years, this has to be right up on there. We've gotten to the point in society where so many people felt that the process of politics and government were leaving them behind. In the last year, members of the General Assembly have been gradually warming up to social networking (Facebook in particular) and blogging as ways to communicate with their constituents and as a way to sidestep the gatekeeper role of the media.

Dwyer proposes "personhood" amendment

In case debates this session over the death penalty and gay rights weren't enough for you, we could see some abortion politics creep into the General Assembly this year, too. Del. Don Dwyer, a socially conservative Anne Arundel County Republican,...

Sen. Exum sponsors bill to weaken PG county council ethics rules

Longer version posted at PG-Politics.

Comment: Sen. Nathaniel Exum (D-24), who has been investigated for ethical lapses, is sponsoring a bill to weaken the ethics rules that govern the Prince George's County Council.  Sen. Exum's daughter, Council member Camille Exum (D-7), has also been in the news for misusing county credit cards for her own personal expenses.

Bill Targets Curb on Pr. George's Donations.
Post, 4 Feb 2009 (Helderman & Wagner ).

A state senator from Prince George's has proposed repealing a law prohibiting members of the Prince George's County Council, including his daughter, from accepting campaign contributions from developers with pending land-use applications.

Sen. Nathaniel Exum (D) filed a bill late Monday that would remove the law, in place since 1993, that forbids contributions to council members in Prince George's from anyone involved in development -- including land-use attorneys, engineers, real estate brokers and others -- while they have a development action pending.

The state of Maryland

As he is bound to do, Governor O'Malley delivered the State of the State Address earlier this week. While the state has challenges, Martin was optimistic for our future because a new Sheriff was in town a few miles down the road in Washington, D.C.

But I think the state of the state is much more accurately assessed in the rebuttal, presented by Delegate Anthony O'Donnell - who happens to be my 2008 Legislator of the Year based on his monoblogue Accountability Project score. If you go to the Maryland Public Television site, you'll see and hear both speeches.

It's also worthwhile to see the response from the Maryland Republican Party:

O'Malley to leave Annapolis

Usually, Annapolis is the center of Maryland's political world during the 90-day General Assembly session. The governor and lawmakers live inside a bubble for three months, and then try to re-connect with the outside world later. But at a time...
