2003 - Country singer Johnny Paycheck, best known for his 1977 song "Take This Job and Shove It," dies in a Nashville nursing home of emphysema and diabetes, among other problems. He is 64.
2001 - James Taylor ties the knot with longtime girlfriend Caroline "Kim" Smedvig. The two marry at a Boston church during a small ceremony attended by about 50 family and friends. Smedvig, an executive with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is given away by John Williams, the Hollywood film composer and Boston Pops conductor laureate. Andre Previn and Yo Yo Ma perform at the wedding.
1999 - Pop star turned disc jockey Bob Geldof, organizer of Live Aid, wins substantial but undisclosed damages from the Sun newspaper in London in a libel case over a story in which it falsely alleges that he had "groped, fondled and kissed" a nightclub stripper.
1998 - Robert Smith of the Cure does battle with the forces of musical evil as embodied by a monstrous Barbra Streisand on the animated television show South Park.
1987 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``Livin' on a Prayer,'' Bon Jovi.
1977 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: "Blinded by the Light," Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The song is written by Bruce Springsteen and first appears on the New Jersey rocker's album "Greetings from Asbury Park."
1969 - Lulu, best known for her hit single ``To Sir with Love,'' marries Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees.
1947 - Dennis DeYoung of Styx is born in Chicago. His biggest solo hit is the top 10 song ``Desert Moon'' in 1984.
