(02-24) 00:42 PST San Francisco -- Five people were shot Monday night in the Tenderloin district and one person died, San Francisco police said.

The shooting occurred at 10:25 p.m. on Turk Street near Taylor. Police Lt. Lea Militello said a silver Mercedes SUV with no license plate was driving westbound on Turk from Taylor toward Jones when someone inside opened fire, striking five people. One woman was killed.

The other four victims were transported to San Francisco General Hospital.

Police responding to the initial reports of the shooting encountered a chaotic scene. One of the victims had run from the location of the shooting to Golden Gate Avenue and Jones and had collapsed there, Militello said.

A large crime scene was cordoned off, and police covered the body of the dead woman with a yellow tarp. The body was lying on Turk in front of a parked minivan. Nearby, a car's back window had been shot out.

Police said the Mercedes fled across the Bay Bridge at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Several San Francisco police cars followed. One officer estimated the Mercedes had reached 110 mph. The suspect vehicle exited the freeway in Oakland and headed onto Webster Street. San Francisco police summoned Oakland police for help but eventually lost track of the Mercedes.

Lise Tulau, a San Francisco resident, said the woman who was killed was her sister's wife. Tulau said she received a call from her sister who believed the victim was an innocent bystander.

She described the victim as a woman in her early 30s who was "nice, pretty, educated and outgoing."

This report updates an earlier version of the story in which police said that six people had been shot.
