Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to ship my order?
Accessory items are usually in stock and ship within one postal day (Mon-Sat). Backpacks are built when you order them, and usually take 1 to 2 days. I occasionally get a bunch of orders at once, or take time off, in which case there can be a delay. If that is the case there should be a notice at the top of every page letting you know how long the wait is. Feel free to ask before you order if you need something quickly and I will get it out sooner if possible.

How much is shipping? Can you ship to my country?
Shipping is just $3.45 in the U.S. and $12.95 for global orders regardless of order size or destination. I can ship to anywhere that www.usps.com will send packages, which is pretty much everywhere. See the shipping page.

I don't offer express shipping unless you ask first, since your items may not be available to ship immediately.

Do you accept returns on custom built backpacks and other items?
Yes. You can return any item in new or lightly used condition for up to 30 days after your purchase for a full refund, minus the shipping fee. I will also do free repairs, or replace any defective product for up to a year. (No one has ever returned a defective or damaged backpack yet!). If it has been more than a year, I can probably still do repairs for free depending on the situation. Just ask!

If there is something that you don't like, or if you have an idea on how to improve an item, please let me know!

How much weight can I carry in your backpacks?
Frameless packs are comfortable with weights under 20 lbs (9 kg). You can probably get away with weights a bit heavier than that on occasion, but if you plan to carry over 20 lbs on a regular basis, you will be better off with an internal frame backpack. A base weight (all gear without food or water) of 8 lbs (3.8 kg) or less is a good target.

How long do ZPacks backpacks last?
The Cuben Fiber Blast backpacks can last for a full 2000+ mile thru-hike with some care. I carried a Blast 26 backpack for my entire 2,663 mile / 5 month Pacific Crest trail thru-hike, but it was very worn out by the end. Sil-nylon backpacks like the Zilch and Z1 should last at least 1,200 miles, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could push one to a full thru-hike with some minor repairs.

An easy way to repair backpacks in the field is to stick a layer of duct tape over a tear, and sew around the edges with dental floss.

Are ZPacks backpacks waterproof?
They are very water resistant, but should not be considered 100% waterproof. They will do fine in light rain or a brief shower, but in an all day downpour consider adding a Pack Cover, or a poncho.

How long have you been doing this?
I have been building my own gear since the late 90's. I opened ZPacks.com in 2005.

Can you build me X?
Maybe, feel free to ask. I often do tarps, sub 1lb tarp-tents, modifications, and other items that are not listed.
