AWMF - the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany
A Short Portrait in English

Tasks and Aims

The Association of the Scientific Medical Societies (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Wissenschaftlichen Medizinischen Fachgesellschaften, AWMF) of Germany advises on matters and tasks of fundamental and interdisciplinary interest in medicine, develops recommendations and resolutions and represents them at the institutions occupied with such tasks, i.e. in the area of research strategies, education, and postgraduate training. Besides the increasingly urgent task of internal cooperation between the Scientific Medical Societies AWMF intends to see that the interests of the medical sciences are accepted positively by the general public.
AWMF advises the government of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as the governments of the German federal countries ("Bundesländer") in all topics of scientific medicine and medical research and classification: the president of AWMF is a born member of the Health Research Council ("Gesundheitsforschungsrat") of the Ministry for Education and Science, Research and Technology ("Bundesministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft, Forschung und Technologie" BMBF).
AWMF acts by direct order of the member societies or the delegates. If AWMF takes up a problem in its own initiative, it seeks agreement with the member societies.
AWMF is carried by the Conference of Delegates, the board and the president. For specific tasks, commissions are constituted from the delegates and - if deemed useful - from specialists out of the member societies.
In this way AWMF retains its independence along with the other associations like Federal Medical Council (Bundesärztekammer, BÄK), German Medical Faculty Association (Medizinischer Fakultätentag, MFT), the Union of Specialists Professional Associations (Gemeinschaft Fachärztlicher Berufsverbände, GFB) and the institutions for the promotion of science as an important pillar in the framework of all medical organisations.
AWMF aimes at a productive collaboration with the above mentioned institutions and the respective political committees in the common interest of an effective and future-oriented development in the medical sciences and practice.

AWMF is the national member for Germany in the "Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences CIOMS" at WHO/Geneva.

Working groups "Doctors & Lawyers" (Ärzte und Juristen) and "Hospital Hygiene" (Krankenhaushygiene) are closely connected with AWMF.

Today (May 2008) 153 scientific-medical societies constitute the group of members of the AWMF.
