42 Blips

By Paul Di Filippo

Digg is a site and service and community well known to even the most casual Web surfer. Founded just four years ago, Digg has become essential as a place where you can go to discover what the hip crowd is reading and viewing and recommending, and to make such nominations yourself. The success of this crowd-sourcing filter paradigm has been so great that it's only natural that other such sites would spring up. Now there's one specifically for the SF community at 42 Blips.
The site is up only in beta mode now, and so there are some clunky bits. For instance, the video demo of how the site works references the political version from the same company, "Beltway Blips." And one is forced to conjecture that the name of the site derives from Douglas Adams' designation of "42" as "the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything," since neither the "About Us" page or the FAQ page discloses the origin.

But all that aside, the site seems to be doing its job and working well so far. When you look at "Top Contributors," you find what seems to be an arbitrary 16 names. Perhaps those are the sole contributors so far? I could not see any way to view the entire community at a glance. In any case, they are recommending tons of reasonably cool books, films and other media.

Of exceptional interest is their list of SF "top blogs," nearly 150 other sites that you can visit (although you have to click twice to get to each one, once on the name in the list, then on its URL).

Such a site as 42 Blips lives or dies by its audience/submitters. If you like it and want to see it flourish, hop aboard now!
