For those of you whom (like me) are eagerly awaiting the next release of Exchange, now known as Exchange 2010 (previously Exchange 14) Microsoft have released an x64 Windows 2008 version here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1898ed2c-2f88-48ac-824e-d3d20fad77d7 for the wider technology community to experiment with.

You will need to ensure that you have the following pre-reqs installed in your x64 2008 Server:

  • Microsoft® .NET Framework 3.5
  • Windows PowerShell v2
  • Windows Remote Management

The beta is valid for 365 days – and you will need to register before you download. Remember that this is Beta software – do not under any circumstance install this beta in your production environment.

Man, I am glad that I am not the mail admin involved here Print E-mail

If you have been following the news in the U.K the latest political hot potato surrounds the Prime Ministers (former) Political Press Officer (which is a fairly high position within Government outside of the cabinet) Damian McBride.

It would seem that Mr McBride had written a number of e-mails which contained less than accurate statements about senior figures within the opposition party (the leader of the opposition – David Cameron, and George Osbourne).
Mr McBride (allegedly) sent these e-mails from his official Number 10 downing street account to at least one person within the Labour party (perhaps his first mistake) with main named recipient being a Mr Derek Draper (whom apparently at the time was trying to gather content for a Labour supporting political blog which could complete one of the leading Anti Government blogs “The Guido Fawkes” blog).

Now the problem for Mr McBride and Mr Draper started when the editor of the aforementioned Guido Fawkes blog managed to get hold of the said e-mails and published them, resulting in Mr McBride having to stand down from his post (resign), fury from the opposition party demanding apologies from the Prime Minister and of course more embarrassment for an already beleaguered in power Labour party.

Changes to the site… Print E-mail
Written by Andy Grogan

Just a quick post to let you know that I have made a couple of changes to the look and feel of the site. The first thing that you will notice is that I have completely changed the site Template. The one that I had been using was nice but one of the defaults supplied with my content manager. Although it has done well for the 4 months the site has been live – I didn’t think that it suited the brand that I have been trying to put over.

I have also moved a couple of the menus around (I might of not finished this yet!) to try and give the site a slightly less “busy” feel – I have also removed the Categories menu for the time being (I have seen from problems with it where the categories vanish when on certain pages) – however all content can still be accessed via Browse Articles and Search functionality.

I am not typically a fan of making wide sweeping changes to sites (such as described above) when they have gone live as both the viewers and myself as the admin lose that level of continuity that is built up, however there were a number of things that I was not that pleased with from the go live date which I did not have time to change or look at as I was in a rush to port content over from my previous blog.

I am hoping that you like the new look (I find the blues soothing :-)), I have a few more changes that I would like to make over the next few weeks, however these will mainly be cosmetic and not as drastic as today.

Cheers

A

My first live speaking engagement - The .:ENow Continental Exchange Breakfast Chat – Paris France Print E-mail

Just a ** Ahem ** small plug for an up and coming speaking engagement that I have been invited to on the 28th April 2009.

For sometime now I have had a affiliation with .:ENow working with them on some consultancy scenarios in relation to Exchange 2007 based within the United States as well as being the primary editor of their ESE (.:ENow Solutions Engine) Blog.

Many of you may have heard of .:ENow as they are the people behind Mailscape (one of the leading Exchange Monitoring and Reporting solutions – not necessarily an advert from me as I aim to remain product neutral on this blog – but if you are interested and looking for an independent view this is what MSExchange.org readers had to say about Mailscape).

Anyway to cut a long story short .:ENow have been invited by one of their premier partners in France to deliver a presentation based around Exchange 2007 Migration Strategies and High Availability. Although .:ENow have the expertise in Exchange to cover the full event from their consultancy pool - they have very graciously invited me to attend the event and deliver two 40 minutes sessions.

The meeting will take place within the American Embassy - “Ambassade des Etats Unis

2 avenue Gabriel

Quick Tip: Removing the Client Access Server Role from a Mixed Role Server… Print E-mail
Written by Andy Grogan

Just a quick post to take you through what I thought would be a simple task, but turned out to be a little more tricky than I expected.

As a quick scene setting – I have been messing around with various Client Access Server configurations within my test lab in preparation for a larger article which I am writing. The environment that I am working within contains a single Forest, with a single domain. Exchange 2003 is installed as well as Exchange 2007 all servers are based on Windows 2003 – therefore we have an Interop scenario.

The first Exchange 2007 server that installed into my environment comprised of the following roles:

  • Hub Transport
  • Client Access Server
  • Mailbox Server

During the course of my experimentation I decided that I not longer needed the Client Access Server Role installed on my first Exchange 2007 Server – as I had installed a new and dedicated Client Access Server in the the LAB.
