Registered Nurses are the most trusted Healthcare professionals in the Country (according to the 2006 Gallup Poll) and the public views nurses as their advocate when facing healthcare challenges. There are more than 17,000 registered Professional Nurses in Suffolk County and they are the largest group of healthcare providers.

Professional Nurses diagnose and treat the human responses to actual or potential health problems. In the provision of nursing care, nurses use the nursing process, a systematic approach to nursing care, based on theoretical and scientific foundations. Nursing is both an art and a science. Guided by the profession's standards for nursing practice and serving within its code of ethics, nurses provide care, including health promotion, health maintenance, and treatment during illness and rehabilitation, to all people across the life span and in all settings.

The Suffolk County Executives Office Division of Human Services oversees the administration of programs that the County Executive considers essential to the community's ongoing development.

These programs provide vital services to individuals and families that have special needs. The Division contains six subdivisions that include the Office for the Aging, Handicapped Services, Minority Affairs, Veterans Services, Women's Services, and the Youth Bureau. County Executive Steve Levy has long recognized that "government has the ultimate responsibility to those that but for government, could not provide for themselves and their families."

The Suffolk County Human Rights Commission (SCHRC) is a county agency that was created in 1963 to enforce the various laws against discrimination.  The Commission became part of the Department of Law in 1993.  The primary objective of the Commission is to work toward the elimination of bias and discrimination in Suffolk County.  This is achieved through public education and complaint investigation.

The Suffolk County Human Rights Commission consists of 15 Commission members who volunteer their time to meet monthly and establish policy, and 7 full-time paid staff members.

If you feel that you have been discriminated against, contact our office and ask to speak with an investigator.
