Employees of Suffolk County government are hired under a merit system known as civil service. The civil service system is organized and operated to provide County departments with a procedure to selecting employees on the basis of their qualifications and competence. Administration of the civil service law and its related procedures is carried out by the Civil Service Department, under the direction of the Personnel Director.

Suffolk County residency is not required for taking examinations; however, preference will be given to County residents upon appointment and those hired are required to live in Suffolk County.
