2003 – Tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards dies in Los Angeles of cancer. He is 78.

2002 – Singer Alan Dale dies at the age of 75 in New York City.

2001 – Conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli dies of a heart attack while leading a performance of Verdi’s “Aida” in Berlin. He is 54.

2001 – Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard pleads guilty in a Queens, N.Y., courtroom to criminal possession of a controlled substance (crack cocaine).

1999 – Rapper Mase, 21, announces that he is retiring from music in order to “follow God.”

1992 – Guitarist Johnny Shines dies in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the age of 77.

1991 – Steve Marriott of Small Faces and Humble Pie dies in a fire at his home in Essex, England, at the age of 44.
