2008 – With “I’m a Fire,” Donna Summer becomes the first artist to have a song reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in every decade since the chart’s 1974 debut.

2003 – Cholly Atkins, the legendary Motown choreographer, dies in Las Vegas. He is 89.

2002 – The body of Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley is found by police in Staley’s north Seattle apartment. The cause of death is determined to be a drug overdose approximately two weeks earlier.

1993 – Saxophonist Steve Douglas dies of heart failure in Los Angeles during a recording session with Ry Cooder. He was 54.

1989 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Like a Prayer,” Madonna.

1988 – Sonny Bono is inaugurated as mayor of Palm Springs, Calif.
   
1975 – The Raspberries split up
