Sports Weekend Preview: It's Kentucky Derby time
The bad economy may dampen the Derby party a bit, but not totally.

They bill it as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports," and they aren't referring to the Famous Racing Sausages at Miller Park.

The 135th running of the Kentucky Derby is slated for Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs. The worst economy in a generation may impact the attendance (hotel occupancy near Louisville is down 15 percent) and scale back the wagering (experts think betting may drop by one-third).

But, the worst economy in a generation can't quell the pomp, ceremony and history of the race -- which for many represents a rite of spring.

I Want Revenge is a 3-1 favorite in the race, which is the first leg of the Triple Crown, followed by Dunkirk and Pioneer of the Nile (4-1) and Friesan Fire (5-1). The Preakness Stakes is May 16 in Baltimore and the Belmont Stakes is June 6 in New York.

If you can't make it to Kentucky, you can still put on a funny hat, drink a mint julep and watch the Run for the Roses.

Here are the horses, listed by post position along with jockey, trainer and odds:

1. West Side Bernie, Stewart Elliot, Kelly Breen, 30-1
2. Musket Man, Eibar Coa, Derek Ryan, 20-1
3. Mr. Hot Stuff, John Velazquez, Eoin Harty, 30-1

Here is a look at other local sporting events this weekend:

ALL WEEKEND

SNAKE BITES
The Brewers square off against the Diamondbacks in Miller Park, where they began a four-game series Friday. Rickie Weeks and Mike Cameron have been pumping out key hits for the Brewers, who welcomed closer Trevor Hoffman back from the disabled list this week. Lefty Manny Parra goes for his first victory of the season Friday night, with Braden Looper and Dave Bush starting on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively. On Sunday, fans will be treated to a Ryan Braun bobblehead.

FRIDAY

TESTING IRON'S METTLE
In what should be a hot af2 rivalry, the Iron take on the Green Bay Blizzard at the Bradley Center. In addition to exciting indoor football, the Iron is reaching out to "Milwaukee's Idols." If you have names like Danny, Gokey, Jamar, Rodgers or Simon you will receive a voucher at the will-call window for $5 off your ticket price. If you don't share a name with an Idol, but have thick, black glasses like Gokey, they'll give you the coupon, too.

SATURDAY

TENNIS, ANYONE?
Being a ball boy (or girl) at the U.S. Open tennis tournament is such a good gig that they had Kramer do it on "Seinfeld." If you'd like to replicate that, Elite Fitness & Racquet Club is hosting tryouts at the Highlander Club on Burleigh Road between noon and 3 p.m.

PLAYOFF PUCK
After losing Game 1 of their second-round series against Houston Thursday night at the Bradley Center, the Admirals will try to even things up with a 7:30 face-off on Saturday night.
