The Šibenik folk orchestra

The Šibenik folk orchestra is the oldest town association that is still functioning. This orchestra has contributed immensely to Šibenik's culture throughout the past 2 centuries.

The Šibenik folk orchestra was established in 1848 as a part of the town's National Guard. Throughout these troublesome years, the Šibenik folk orchestra was the bearer of social and national identity, and despite this it will be the only Croatian association functioning in these parts the following 40 years. The II world war was the worst for the orchestra, many musicians were killed and all of the instruments were pillaged by the Italian aggressor in 1941.
the Šibenik folk orchestra has performed in front of many state officals: the Austrian-Hungarian emperor Franjo Joseph 1 st (Šibenik and Skradin, 1875, Split 1891), British Queen Aleksandra (Šibenik, 1911), Yugoslav king Alexander (Šibenik, 1925), British king Edward VIII (Šibenik, 1936); Yugoslav President J.B.Tito (Split 1950 & 1953), Dutch Queen Beatrix (Split 1990), Croatian president Tuđman (Šibenik 1990 & 1995, Zagreb 1994 & 1997), the pope John Paul II (Vatican, 2000). The orchestra has played for many eminent figures of Croatian history: Governor Joseph Jelačić (Šibenik, 1851), Stjepan Radić (Šibenik & Zagreb , 1925), Governor Ivan Šubašić (Šibenik, 1939).

The Šibenik folk orchestra has performed over 12.000 times: 200 concerts, 4000 parades, and 6000 funerals and commemorations. The orchestra has performed at 20 international festivals and parades, they have performed in 12 European countries and each time they have proudly represented their town and homeland. The orchestra has participated in several films, and performed at large sporting events: the Mediterranean games (Šibenik, 1979), the R. Korać cup play-offs in basketball (West Berlin, 1983), and at the European Athletic Championship ( Split , 1990). The orchestra performed at 8 state parades, where they always won high places. Today the Šibenik folk orchestra operates as an association that is divided into 2 parts: the wind orchestra which has 55 members, lead by Damir Marušić. The wind orchestra obtains musicians from a school,” Little school of musicians”, which at the time has 5 pupils.

The second part are the majorettes (baton twirlers), established in 1996, lead by Lade Ležaić and Vesna Bolanče. They also have accomplished significant achievements in Croatia and they have performed in France . The president of the Šibenik folk orchestra is Darko Gulin.
