A Brief History of Trolley Square

Trolley Square Station

In June 1864, the Wilmington City Railroad Company opened the city's first trolley line, including Delaware Avenue to Rising Sun Lane. Middle Depot was located at Delaware Avenue and Dupont Street, close to the B&O; Railway passenger depot.

This circa 1880 photo shows three men standing in front of a trolley at the entrance to the Middle Depot barn. This view is looking towards the current Trolley Square Center, the corner with Happy Harry's, from the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Dupont Street.

One hundred and twenty years later, where the Middle Depot stood has become the center of a vibrant neighborhood in Wilmington, The Village of Trolley Square.
