[edit] Community description

City Terrace is located atop the Monterey Hills at the heart of "East Los." The district's steep, winding streets are lined with generally well-preserved Spanish Colonial houses.

Like most of Eastern Los Angeles, it was once considerably more diverse, with large Jewish, Serbian, Italian, and Japanese populations in addition to its Mexican/Chicano plurality, but since the 1950s it has been solidly Latino and predominantly working-class. Gangs have been a serious problem in the area since the 1970s, although the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has made some progress in combating them through community policing.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is headquartered in City Terrace, just to the east of Eastern Avenue.
