This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

[edit] Standard procedures
If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If the intent is to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, the correct place to do that is Wikipedia:Translation. As an alternative, you can leave a message on the contributing user's talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.
Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.
If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to AfD. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{notenglish}} to {{subst:afd}} and the other deletion steps should be carried out.
When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as xrce to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.
Please check for copyvio before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for CSD G12 can be speedily deleted with {{db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on WP:CP.) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.
When a page listed here has been translated, its entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

[edit] Boilerplate text
For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):
- 1. Use the notice {{Notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{Notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
This article needs translation into English. This article is written in a language other than English. If it is intended for readers from the community of that language, it should be contributed to the Wikipedia in that language. See list of Wikipedias. Please see this article's entry on Pages needing translation into English for discussion. If the article is not rewritten in English within the next two weeks it will be listed for deletion and/or moved to the Wikipedia in its current language. If you have just labeled this page as needing translation, please add {{subst:Needtrans | pg = Pages needing translation into English | Language = unknown | Comments = }} ~~~~ to the bottom of this section of Pages needing translation into English. |
- 2. Add a mention on this page, using:
- {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~ replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language if you know which language was used, or {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~ if you cannot identify the language used
- 3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{Uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}. Usage is {{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|datein2weeksfromlisting}}~~~~.
If there is just a section that needs translation, that notice is inappropriate, so it's a little trickier:
- 1. Use [[Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation]].
- 2. Add an appropriate note at the top of the page in question, e.g.:
- ''Section [[#name-of-section|name-of-section]] contains text that needs translation into English.''.
- 3. Add a mention on this page.
If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:
- 1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}, which will show up as:
This article contains translated text and needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency. Please see this article's entry on Pages needing translation into English for discussion. If you have just labeled this page as needing such attention, please add {{subst:Duflu | pg= Pages needing translation into English | Language = | Comments = }} ~~~~ to the bottom of Pages needing translation into English. |
- 2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section on this page.

and check the language recognition chart.
If you are sure, consider placing the corresponding template on the creator's talk page.

The initial language of this article was Albanian. Kosovan writer. I've done my best to rewrite but some of it read as if badly translated or machine translated. [edit] Tenore contraltino
The initial language of this article was Italian. This article is a translation from Tenore contraltino in the Italian Wikipedia. It's in English, but needs some polishing for idiomatic English expression and to ensure that the meanings intended in the original have been successfully expressed in the English version. Preferably needs someone with expertise in opera or classical music. Voceditenore (talk) 11:10, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Medellín
This article, albeit well written, has likely been written by a Spanish speaker and as such needs an English speaker to correct a few translation errors. When I have time I may get on it... Simon Kilpin (talk) 12:37, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
- I've made a start of it and tried to simplify the English. About half way through. But will certainly need second pass to check references and also any slips I have made. I've added some links, removed overlinks, as far as I've got so far SimonTrew (talk) 12:53, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- I should add maybe my Spanish is only so-so but for this purpose it is quite like French translation, it's sub-editing more than anything, moving words around, removing redundant articles, that kind of thing. I agree it is well written. I'm just tidying up really like I would any other article, not specifically for translation. But once I've done the donkey work someone else can then do some blue pencilling after? SimonTrew (talk) 12:56, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Tusculum
This article is in English, but several portions appear to be direct translations from on the Italian Wikipedia. Some of this article is in good shape, but there are a lot of grammatical and spelling issues strewn throughout. While I can read the Italian version, I'm nowhere near fluent enough in the language to tackle a better translation of the more confusing passages myself. • WarpFlyght (talk • contribs) 13:07, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
