SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

 Printable Fact Sheet

Here's a brief checklist to consider when submitting items for publication. To submit items, send to afcybernews@barksdale.af.mil

ARTICLES
--A byline should identify by rank, name, unit and base the person who authored the story.

--Sources of attribution. Get at least two people talking in the story. If the story is about communicators who built a network in an austere location, then get some quotes from the people who built it, and some quotes from the customers who are using it. Does the network help the Ops Group? Then get a quote from a pilot who benefited from comm's hard work.

--Length of stories should range between 400-600 words. The longer it takes the reader to figure out what you're trying to say, the more likelihood he/she will stop reading it before they get the information you intended them to have.

--Spell out acronyms on first reference and try to avoid using jargon.

--Articles should be coordinated within your chain of command, your Public Affairs office and your security manager prior to sending them here.

--All copy submitted is edited to ensure it conforms to Air Force journalism guidelines for news writing; conforms to the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual and command procedures for abbreviations, capitalization, etc.; and meets appropriate story length or to facilitate visual communication.

PHOTOS
--Take the pictures or graphics out of the powerpoint or Word document.
Send us the raw files. We can NOT use images that are embedded files. They don't have the quality resolution needed for publication.

--Plan ahead to include photos or graphics.  Imagery is an integral part of the visual package and with a little planning, you can really make your stories stand out from the pack during the story selection process. Photos may also be used for other visual products, so even if you don't see them in the intercom, you may see them elsewhere.

--Just like a story, we require all supporting information to be included with the photo. We need rank, name and unit of the people in the photograph. We also need the photographer to be fully identified in the same manner ... name, rank, unit and base.

--Photo size should be a minimum of 5x7 at 200 dpi, in a digital format.

WHAT TYPE OF INFORMATION CAN I SUBMIT?
-- Commentaries:  Leaders at all levels (enlisted and officer) are encouraged to submit articles that speak to the mission and the changes ahead, values and observations, or overviews of the various priorities for your units, or overall leadership issues.

--Identify the gear, how it's being used, who is using it and what the future holds for this technology, and feel free to submit this in a Q & A format.

--First person accounts: Your observations as a leader and communicator are always welcomed. Life on the frontlines, how your unit overcame hardships for success, etc.

--News Briefs: Some items don't require long stories, but can be noted in the briefs sections. This can include conferences, kudos, stand-alone photos, etc.

--Human interest features: Do you have a cyber warrior who's done something great or has a unique hobby, collection or talent? We feature these people supporting the warfighter beyond just their day jobs. Helping in the community, working with children, participating in extreme athletics or traveling to some interesting place are just some of the ideas you can consider. Our cyber folks are doing great things out there and we want to highlight your efforts.
