Climate change and conflicts: Is there a link at all?

Many scientists, politicians and journalists now agree that climate change and a scarcity of resources could lead to armed conflict. So much so, in fact, that this year's Nobel Prize for Peace went to former U.S. vice president turned environmentalist Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But the argument is far from settled, writes online magazine Science Daily.

The link between pressure on natural resources and armed conflicts simply doesn't exist, say researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Iraq: The calm before the storm?

The British forces have finally handed over control to the locals in Iraq's Basra and some British papers are cautiously optimistic. But their legacy after four and a half years in this southern province is less than impressive to the new police commander, Jalil Khalaf.

"They left me militia, they left me gangsters, and they left me all the troubles in the world," Khalif complains in a film by Britain's Guardian Films and ITV News, which can be viewed on the Observer website.

What next for Kosovo?

The talks about the final status of Kosovo, which have dragged on for months, are officially over. What happens next seems to be anybody's guess, says the Balkans commentator Micha Glenny, writing in Britain's New Statesman.

Kosovo Albanians are planning to declare independence soon and Serbia is refusing to listen to any argument containing the word 'independence', so can we expect another war in the province?
