Brazil floods leave hundreds of thousands homeless

Floods and mudslides in northeastern Brazil have killed around 40 people, left hundreds of thousands homeless and devastated swathes of farmland.

Unusually heavy rain has been falling in the region for more than two months, and forecasters expect it to continue. The flooding - said to be the worst in recent memory - has washed out bridges and roads, submerged homes and destroyed crops, according to aid workers.

Last year's China earthquake struck barely a week after Cyclone Nargis hammered Myanmar. Both disasters caused a horrifying loss of life, yet the two governments' responses could hardly have been more different.

China sent in more than 100,000 troops and dozens of aircraft to rescue survivors and deliver emergency aid. It was quick to accept international assistance - the first time it has done so for a major disaster - and visas arrived fast for aid workers.

Aid groups scramble for funds for Sri Lanka crisis

Aid agencies are launching multi-million dollar appeals for Sri Lanka where tens of thousands of traumatised civilians are streaming out of the war zone as the army seeks to crush the Tamil Tiger rebels.

Camps are bursting at the seams, with one aid worker saying some families are living in a space the size of a sofa. Hospitals are also overflowing as doctors work round the clock to treat civilians emerging from the conflict area with horrific blast injuries.

Thousands of people fleeing Sri Lanka's war zone are arriving at hospitals with horrific injuries and severe trauma, doctors say.

Aid workers are also warning there could be a "bloodbath" as the war between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels enters what appears to be the final days.

Soaring violence in Somalia and Afghanistan helped make 2008 the most dangerous year on record for aid workers, with 122 killed while carrying out their work, a new report shows.

Aid work is now more risky than U.N. peacekeeping as attacks become increasingly politically motivated in some countries, researchers said.
