If you watch the Halo: Reach trailer (download here) it ends with the line,
"This is Sierra 259. You have Spartans on the ground sir, we're not going anywhere."

Also in the trailer is a female voice saying,
"This is Sierra 320. Prepped for combat insertion."

Spartans 259 and 320? The original Spartan II project only had 150 candidates.

After the completion of the original Spartan II project it was indicated in the books that a second group of Spartans would begin training. Is Spartan 259 a member of this second class of Spartans?

List of the original Spartans:
Jai-006
Li-008
Joshua-029
Vinh-030
Samuel-034
Isaac-039
Douglas-042
William-043
Anton-044
Keiichi-047
Kurt-051
Linda-058
Malcolm-059
Maria-062
Fhajad-084
Kelly-087
Jerome-092
Grace-093
Frederic-104
Adriana-111
John-117
Alice-130
Cassandra, James, Kirk, Mike, René, Randall, Sheila

EDIT: Addressing some comments in this topic

Spartan IIs

150 suitable candidates were originially identified for the Spartan II project, but for budgetary reasons only half that number were conscripted. All of the 150 candidates were selected based on certain genetic markers. Seventy-Five children out of the original 150 candidates were abducted and trained. Of those 75, thirty died from the physical augmentation procedure and twelve were crippled. The crippled Spartans were discharged from the program and recruited by ONI for their increased mental capacity and tactical skill.

Only thirty-three Spartans survived the augmentation process without complications and went into service.
This group of Spartan IIs began training in 2517 and completed their training around 2524. They received their first MJOLNIR MK IV armor in 2525.

Spartan IIs, Class 2

The second class to go through the Spartan program are mentioned in the books. When the first class of Spartan IIs are graduating there's mention of the new class that will follow them. This second group was delayed due to Dr. Halseys wanting to improve the augmentation process to increase the survivability rate prior to training a new group of Spartans. Here we have confirmation that the second group of Spartans were conscripted in 2537. The second class of Spartan IIs would have been operational sometime after their augmentation in 2545.
Reach falls in August 2552.
This means there's a second group of Spartans running around for about 7 years prior to the Covenant attack on Reach.

spartan IIIs

The Alpha Company, Spartan IIIs began training in 2531 and were all killed in Operation Prometheus in July 2537.
Beta company starts training in 2539 and are all KIA in 2545 in Operation Torpedo, except for 2 survivors. (Tom and Lucy)
Gama company begins training in 2545 are not deployed until AFTER the fall of Reach.

Sierra 259 means Spartan 2, 059. That's Malcolm-059.

John-117 has referred to himself as 117, but never 2-117. According to this theory she would be a Spartan 3? This is unlikely.
Additionally, that person on FLEETCOM say there are Spartans on the ground. Malcolm was at Reach and he made it to the ground but only as a smear across the surface of the planet. Malcolm died on impact when dropping onto the surface of Reach.

When radioing on a FLEETCOM, Spartans are required to state class and ID tag.
Malcom is a Spartan II, not III, and number 59 in that class. Hence, 259.

I think he means that the Spartan was referencing himself as a Spartan 2. Since he was saying the two directly previous to his ID (59), it sounds like he was saying Sierra 259. When in fact he was trying to say Sierra II 059.

I still think it's possible that it is a Spartan III. Sierra 259. Might be a fun change.

John 117.

Surely since John is also a Spartan 2, he would be Sierra 2 117.

Anyway, a great way that people explain is that in WW2, Hitlers elite were called 3rd panzer elite or something, to give the Allies the impression they had 3 of these divisions running around when they only had 1.

The numbers may mean nothing, John was the first candidate visited, yet he got labelled 117.

He is saying Sierra 2-59. Get it now?

To Halo 2 Rookie, Spartan III's, funded by Colonel Ackerson, are significantly weaker than Spartan II's, their quality compromised for quantity. Improbable, but not impossible.

That would mean that the girl towards the beginning of the trailer that identifies her self as Sierra 320 is a Spartan III?

Could you give a source for this information or another example from Halo canon where a Spartan has respond in this manner on FLEETCOM?

It's an interesting theory.

Stop posting this. The "Spartan-II" designation was never used by Spartans for identification. This is not only unlikely, but there are no references of this in any work. We cannot be sure.

The novels, and reality. On any military frequency, soldiers are required to state Ops class and ID/ Serial tag.

I agree......

People are slappably stupid here, this is Bungie when it comes to their games the story ain't too complex.

Plus referencing Malcolm as Sierra 259 (Spartan 2 059) is a bit of fan service as well.

The simplest answer is usually the right one kids

The Covenant wouldn't care at all how many Spartans there were, they just wanted to kill them.

I have to disagree.

I've seen examples of Master Chief referring to himself as 117, but never 2-117.
And then there's Sierra 320 in the same trailer. Is she then a Spartan 3? This seems doubtful without even checking the timelines or other source material.

Please, identify yourself and ensure you are not an alien to the Halo franchise. The story is so ridiculously complex in some areas that theorists today still can't piece it together with all the information we have available to us.

Plus referencing Malcolm as Sierra 259 (Spartan 2 059) is a bit of fan service as well.
Please reference one time that the "II" tag was used in a Spartan's identification. I shall wait.

Sure is. When it makes sense, that is.

What he said. To be more specific, here is an entry from halopedia:

'Malcolm-059 was one of the SPARTAN-II super soldiers. Not much is known about him.

He was never mentioned by name until First Strike (Battle of Reach). He was assigned to Red Team, by John-117. When Red Team's Pelican, Bravo 001, was hit by plasma, its pilot, Mitchell, was killed and the ship was rendered unusable. Red team was forced to jump out. Malcolm hit the ground hard, and was killed on impact.

Later, his team leader, Frederic-104, salvaged an unbroken Pressure Seal from Malcolm's MJOLNIR suit. Though he loathed doing this, Frederic-104 decided that "it would dishonor his fallen comrade not to use his gift of the spare part." '

My point exactly.

And about the Covenant not caring how many Spartans there are, the Spartans were designed to fight insurgents, not the covenant, who most likely DID care how many there were.

I would think that the candidate numbers were in the order in which they were identified. Meaning John was the 117th candidate who had a file created for the Spartan II program.
