2008 – Rock pioneer Bo Diddley dies of heart failure in Archer, Fla., at the age of 79.

2006 – Vince Welnick of the Grateful Dead commits suicide in Sonoma County, Calif. He is 55.

2000 – Western swing pioneer Adolph Hofner dies at his home in San Antonio. He is 84.

1999 – Junior Braithwaite, one of the original members of Bob Marley’s Wailers, is shot and killed in Kingston, Jamaica. He is 47.

1999 – Backstreet Boys surpass Garth Brooks’ first-week sales record of 1.08 million, when “Millennium” sells over 1.13 million in its first.

1997 – Jazz trumpeter Adolphus Doc Cheatham dies of a stroke in Washington, D.C. He is 91.

1992 – Freedom Williams quits C+C Music Factory. Williams also files a $10 million fraud and breach of contract suit in New York against the group.

1987 – Classical guitarist Andres Segovia dies of a heart attack. Age 94.

1985 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Tears For Fears.

1976 – Tim Rice-Oxley of Keane is born in East Sussex, England.

1975 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” John Denver.

1972 – Former teen idol Dion performs in a reunion concert with The Belmonts at Madison Square Garden in New York.

1970 – B-Real (Louis Freese) of Cypress Hill is born in Los Angeles.

1964 – The Rolling Stones make their U.S. debut performance at the Manning Bowl in Lynn, Mass.

1960 – Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet is born in London.

1954 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Little Things Mean a Lot,” Kitty Kallen.
 
1944 – Composer Marvin Hamlisch is born in New York City.

1941 – William Guest of Gladys Knight and the Pips is born in Atlanta.

1941 – Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones is born in London.

1937 – Singer-songwriter Jimmy Jones is born in Birmingham, Ala.
