Berkeley sidewalk problem closer to final fixMonday, June 15, 2009 Berkeley sidewalk closer to fix What still needs work: In March, Chronicle Watch reported that a water problem on a Berkeley sidewalk would be resolved in April, but the original tipster, Bob Sommer, contacted Chronicle Watch to say the problem was still unresolved.
Yes and no. The sidewalk in question is in front of an undeveloped lot on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, between Stuart and Oregon streets. Whenever it rained, the sidewalk flooded with water. In the aftermath of Sommer's original tip, the city of Berkeley fixed the clogged storm drain that was causing the flooding, said city spokeswoman Mary Kay Clunies-Ross. What's still in bad shape is the lot's sidewalk, which is badly uneven compared with the rest of the sidewalk along Martin Luther King Jr. Way, which has recently been repaved. The lot's co-owner, Cullen Burda, e-mailed to say, "The property has building permits and is scheduled to begin construction in September. It is intended that the sidewalk will be replaced in its entirety before the next rainy season." This article appeared on page B - 2 of the San Francisco Chronicle |
