Review of "+ANIMA Vol 1"

Story: The adventures of four +Anima, people with both human and animal characteristics, struggling to fit in.

Characters:

Cooro: Presumably eleven years old, Cooro is the leader of the gang. He was abandoned as a baby. His +Anima attribute are black wings, which people immediately take as a bad sign.

Husky: The androgynous, “Mermaid Princess”, Husky can be a bit hot-headed at times. He’s the first member to join Cooro on his adventures and is able to transform into a fish from his waist to his feet.

Senri: The oldest of the group, Senri uses his right bear arm to battle enemies. He rarely speaks and carries around a book that has a flower and one of Cooro’s black feather creased inside.

Nana: The youngest of the group, she takes in instant liking to Cooro, since they both have black wings. Being part bat, Nana’s able to use “ultra sonic screech”, an attack that makes enemies stop and cover their ears, or pass out.

Pros: The artwork is really nice and the story is easy to follow. I also love the character designs with Senri and Cooro dressed similar to Native Americans [minus Cooro’s goggles], and Nana like a settler. The setting itself is like the wild west early years meets Medieval villages [?], which I love. The little character descriptions in the back are an added bonus, though you might not need them.

Cons: Despite that Cooro and his entourage all have the goal to find a place where they belong, it feels as if the series will have nothing else to offer. The structure of it is for Cooro to wander around until he comes across another +Anima from another troubled background, or to come upon a town in need of help. Still, they might throw in Cooro’s parentage to make things interesting. I also don’t like that some of the main characters aren’t original. Cooro reminds me of a cross between Luffy and a young Goku; and Senri is your typical silent, strong, bishonen.

Personal Notes: Would it be considered cannibalism if Husky ate fish? ^.^
