Live Events:

Q. When is my favourite artist coming to MuchMusic?
A. PROMISE, cross our hearts and hope to die that if they're coming, we'll post it in the TV section the second it's confirmed. Keep in mind that we often don't know about live guests until the week or even the day before so keep checking!

Q. Ok, my favourite artist is coming to Much – how do I get in!?
A. Depends: If they're coming in as guests of MOD, then you need to sign up for MOD (see next answer). If there's a wristband policy in effect, then details about how to score wristbands will be posted on our website. (Usually, this involves calling in during a specified date & time and answering up to 5 questions about the visiting artist.) If there isn't a wristband policy in effect and if we're allowing fans into the MuchEnvironment, wristbands will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis but admission is NEVER guaranteed. You are, of course, always welcome to come watch from the streetfront! Please note that all guests to the MuchEnvironment are required to be at least 14 years of age.

Q. How can I be part of the MuchOnDemand (MOD) audience?
A. All you have to do is call (416) 870-MUCH (6824) and choose option #3. If you have successfully added your name to the guest list, you will receive a call back to confirm. (To better your chances of getting in, you need to call well in advance!)

Tickets are free, but you must be at least 14 years of age to attend. MOD is shot live Monday to Friday from 5-6 pm. Audience members must be at MuchMusic, 299 Queen Street West, by 3:45pm.

Q. How do I get into the MuchMusic Video Awards?
A. We give away a limited amount of wristbands, which you can win during on-air and on-line giveaways. All information about when and how to win these wristbands will be announced on-air and posted on our website closer to the date of the MMVAs.

Q. How do I get tickets to an Intimate & Interactive (I&I;) or Live@Much?
A. There aren't tickets - there's a guest list. To get your name onto the coveted list, you're required to call a 1-800 number during a specified date & time (approx. one week prior to the event) and answer up to 5 questions to prove that you're a real fan of the featured artist. You can also win via online giveaways. Details will be announced on-air and on-line once we've determined the date for the giveaway, so stay tuned and/or keep checking back here! Please note that guests are required to be at least 14 years of age.

Q. When is my favourite artist playing a concert near me?
A. If you don't see it on the Concert Listings page of our website, then try checking Pollstar.

Q. How do I get tickets to a concert?
A. Unfortunately, Much can't help you here - we're a television station, and contrary to popular belief, do not have a ticket allotment, nor are we involved in ticket sales in any way. Try the artist's website, or Ticketmaster.

Programming:

Q. When's my favourite MuchMusic show on?
A. To find out what's airing on Much and when, check out All Shows, Concerts & Specials and MuchDailyListings. We list programs on a monthly basis. If you don't see it there, then it's not airing but could come up in future months, so keep checking! Also have a look at our Schedule Grid.

Q. When will you be repeating that show/concert/special?
A. Keep checking MuchDailyListings to find out if and when it might be repeating. If you don't see it there, then it's not airing but could come up in future months, so keep checking!

Q. How do I get a copy of my favourite video and/or program?
A. We can't provide copies of any videos or programs because of copyright laws.

Q. How does Much decide what music videos make it to air?
A. We have a music committee made up of MuchMusic programmers and producers who meet on Tuesdays and screen new videos all day. Then they decide who makes the cut. "We judge videos on the quality of the song, quality of the video, as well as the song's airplay stats and the album's sales. We pick what's hot and pass on what's not." - Senior Music Programmer Craig Halket.

Q. How does Much decide what videos get onto the MuchMusic Countdown?
A. The Countdown is decided by our music committee. They look at many factors including how the song is doing on other charts, album sales, popularity and quality of the video.

Q. How can I vote for a video for the Countdown?
You can't - our programmers determine that based on how well the single is doing on other charts, how well the album is selling, and the quality of the video. You can, however, have your say on PunchMuch and MOD.

Q. What is the first video that MuchMusic aired?
A. We hit the airwaves on August 31, 1984 with an early music-to-film synchronization short from the 1920s which featured Eubie Blake performing Snappy Songs. Then we aired Rush's "The Enemy Within."

Q. What is the theme song of The NewMusic?
A. "Papa's Got a Brand New Pig Bag" by Pig Bag.

Contacting peeps:

Q. How do I contact MuchMusic to:
Write to my favorite on-air personality?
Request a video?
Book a tour of MuchMusic?
Apply for a job or internship?
Apply to be a VJ?
Book a Much Video Dance?
Submit my band's video for airplay?
Ask a question or make a comment?

Q. How do I contact my favourite artist?
A. Unfortunately, we don't have info like that available. You should try contacting them via their record company and/or official website.

Student requests:

Q. How can I arrange to interview a VJ?
A. Unfortunately, our VJs get way more student requests for interviews via phone, email and in person than they can possibly accommodate. As a result and in the interest of fairness, we can no longer make them available for these requests. Sorry.

Q. I'm doing a project on MuchMusic – Can you send me some info?
A. While we appreciate the interest, we unfortunately don't have any info that we could send you. Your best bet is to look for any print articles that have been written about Much over the years.

Q. Can I job shadow someone at MuchMusic?
A. Yes, if it is part of a school-related program. To apply, please send the following to Margaret Weinrauch-Perrotta, Senior Unit Production Manager, MuchMusic, 299 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON, M5V 2Z5 or Fax # 416-591-7535:
  • A letter from your school stating that this is a school related program
  • Details of the program including date & duration
  • A contact name and number from your school (eg. teacher or principal)
  • Your HOME phone number
Please note that we do not offer any job shadowing of our on-air personalities, and we consider students on a first-come, first-serve basis with preference given to post secondary and secondary students enrolled in a broadcasting or media related program. Also, due to the nature of live television production, we often encounter last minute schedule and production changes. Should this happen on a day when you are shadowing, we reserve the right to cancel and/or postpone your visit and cannot promise a future date.

Q. What should I take in school so that I can eventually work at MuchMusic?
A. The best we can do is tell you what the background and education is of the employees here. Many of the jobs at MuchMusic are technical which include editing, general operations, camera operation, computer services (both hardware and those who handle our websites, etc.), creative services (e.g. designing logos on computers in our graphics department), etc. Non-technical jobs range from producers and programmers to publicity jobs and public relations. And then of course there are our on-air personalities. Depending on which of these areas most appealed to you, you would choose the appropriate educational and practical preparation. Many people who work here have either done a degree in Radio and Television Broadcasting at the university or college level (many have gone to Ryerson), or have some sort of Communications degree. Because we are first and foremost a TV station, that is the area of expertise required for most who work here, rather than music training. Talk to your guidance counsellor about the best educational route you can take, and good luck!

Q. How can I sign up for the Much Newsletter?
To sign up for any of the MuchMusic newsletters, please visit the Connect section. In order to recieve the newsletters, new users will need to create a Profile first.

Q. How can I un-subscribe from the Much Newsletter?
We'll be sad to see you go, but if you're sure you don't want to receive mail from us anymore, just follow the link at the bottom of the newsletter you've received to unsubscribe! You can resubscribe at any time!

Q. Why isn't there a page on my favourite artist in your Artists section?!
A. Our current archives represent, in majority, our playlist on-air. If you're unable to find the artist info that you're looking for, it may be that s/he or they isn't currently on our playlist. As we continue to update our database, you will find more and more artist features. Please continue to check back and let us know what you think.

Q. I can't see the contests!
A. Are you running ad-blocking software or do you have javascript disabled in your browser? Either of these may result in problems when viewing our contests.

Contests:

Q. Why do I need to fill out a profile?
A. Becoming a member allows you access to all the great tools and info on our sites. In order to provide you certain things that you want, we need bits of info from you. Instead of asking you for little bits of info each and every time you want to sign up for something or enter a contest, we have created ONE form for you to fill out, once. This will allow you complete access to everything from contests and newsletters to show reminders and Web radio. Once you have become a member you can sign up for or enter as many or as few things as you like and you will never have to fill out another form. Once you have registered your data is saved and, from that point on, you will only need to type in your username and password when entering our contests or signing up for something else fun.

Q. Will my profile information remain private?
A. Yes! We have built a secure system to protect your profile information. Your profile information is only used for the purposes stated at the time of collection. We will not send you anything that you do not sign up for yourself. In addition, we do our best to make sure you are aware of the implications of each action you take, sometimes to the point of being annoying. But, we would prefer that you know stuff and keep control of your profile information. You should also know that unless you have checked-off a box on the entry form that gives us permission to share your information with the Contest Sponsor, the information you have provided to us is only used to run the contest. By selecting the “contests” tab above and then hitting the Sponsor Permissions button you can check and modify all your Sponsor Permissions. By selecting the “contests” tab and hitting the Contest Tracker button you can see which contests you have entered and your point accumulation (if applicable). For more information on privacy please review our Privacy Statement.

Q. Will my username and password ever expire?
A. If you do not use your username and password for a period of six (6) months, we will email you a notice advising you that your profile is about to expire. If you do not notify us that you wish to keep your username and password active, they will be deleted from our databases along with your personal information. In future, you would have to re-register with us again if you decided to sign up for something that required a profile. Please remember: when your information expires there is a chance that someone may choose your old username and / or password, in which case, you won't be able to choose the same ones again.

Q. How can I unsubscribe to something or change / delete my profile?
A. You can change / delete your profile simply selecting the “my profile” tab, above. Then select the Edit Profile button. You can either change your profile information or click the link that will delete your profile. To unsubscribe to newsletters please select the "newsletters" tab above and uncheck any box corresponding with any newsletter you no longer wish to receive.

Q. I don't feel comfortable entering my exact birthday - can I just enter the month and year?
A. Unfortunately no. We need your entire birthday, day, month and year to ensure that you meet the age requirement to enter and win our contests. Simply giving us the month and/or year does not distinguish your age on a particular day of that month or year.

Q. How often can I enter each contest?
A. Entry guidelines change from contest to contest. Some contests do have restrictions upon how many times you can enter and collect points. These guidelines are clearly outlined in the Rules and Regulations of each contest. See the next FAQ answer.

Q. Where can I find the Rules and Regulations?
A. Individual contest Rules and Regulations are located within each contest. The Rules and Regulations are accessible from the start page of each contest via a link. As well, when you begin the entry process we provide another link to the Rules and Regulations and a check box to ensure that you have in fact read them. Rules and Regulations are clearly marked and are always apparent.

Q. Why do the age requirements for each contest differ?
A. The age requirement changes for each contest because prizing and sponsorship changes for each contest. To be sure about specific age requirements, read the Rules and Regulations for each contest you enter. But just so you know, the minimum age for all of our contests is 13.

Q. I live in Quebec. Why can't I enter MuchMusic contests?
A. When we do contests in Quebec, we have to go through a separate body called the "Regis des Jeux et des Lotteries" before we can do ANYTHING. This involves weeks of applications, and justifications, and reports, and very often these contests are on very strict schedules. Even if we wanted to give away t-shirts in a contest, we have to do this. Often, the sponsor doesn't want to wait 4-6 weeks to get approval from this body. They're on their own deadlines. Honestly, often, there just isn't TIME. But there's good news! Our sister station, MusiquePlus, has cool contests and stuff for all of you itchin' to get involved - Check it out!

Q. How will I know that I have won a contest?
A. The procedure for how winners are notified is explained as you enter each contest.

Q. I do not live in Canada, what can I sign up for?
A. If you are an international user, hey thanks for coming by! Although you will be unable to enter our contests you can still sign up for a Quick Membership to receive our newsletters. Go to the "newsletters" tab above and pick and choose to your hearts content. You are not eligible for any of our contests, because they are only open to Canadian residents.

Q. All right, I have read all of this and I still have a problem or a question about an online contest, or my membership what should I do now?
A. You should email your comments and questions and we will do our best to fix the problem.

Other...

Q. How do I get MuchLOUD and/or MuchVibe!?
A. MuchVibe and MuchLOUD are Category 2 digital channels. For information on how to subscribe to either of these services please contact your local cable provider.

Q. I live in the U.S. – Can I watch MuchMusic?
A. Unfortunately you can't get the MuchMusic signal in the U.S. You were once able to watch MuchUSA, which had all but eliminated our programming, mostly airing their own. They have now turned into Fuse. Here's the most recent press release - Keep checking back at this website for updates. You may see MuchMusic in the States soon enough...

Q. How do I get a copy of a CD?
A. Contrary to popular belief, Much has absolutely no copies of any artist's cds to sell, trade, lend or give away. If you're looking for information or music from a particular artist, your best bet is to check the artist's website, or the website of their record company. To purchase albums, please contact your nearest record store.

Q. How can I start a career in music?
A. Unfortunately, MuchMusic really isn't the place to get info about this and as far as we know, there isn't a specific place where you can get help with this endeavour. Try researching the matter yourself because there might be some books and magazines that can provide advice.

Q. How can I send my demo tape in?
A. Because we're a music video station, we only accept videos for consideration, and do not evaluate demo tapes etc. or give feedback on music.
