Alexa Provides a search engine, web site information and traffic rankings and Open Directory-based web directory from one page. AltaVista A full-service web search that includes an MP3/Audio tab. Alta Vista is also the home of the Babel Fish translation page featuring translation to and from English for over a dozen languages. Ask.com Formerly "Ask Jeeves," now includes web search, news and information resources, maps and Ask for Kids, a study and learning site. Dogpile A metasearch engine that compiles results most of the major search engines. Theoretically, can search more of the web than any single search engine. Another metasearch engine is metacrawler. Exalead Exalead attempts to add value to search results by displaying statistics and information about the results, including thumbnails of the pages found. Gigablast Gigablast guesses related keywords from a search query--type in a question and it often provides the right answer in "Gigabits" above the search results. Also includes a government search (beta as of March, 2007). Google Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. kartoo A "visual" search engine that dispalys results, keywords, connections and relationships in a "map" format. Live Search Microsoft's search engine, successor to MSN Search. Of interest for researchers, now includes Academic search for abstracts, texts, references and notes. mozDex An open soure technology search engine that relies on a community of users to improve and expand the product. Yahoo! Search Another full-service search site from a major Internet company.

Answers.com An "answer-based" search engine. Presents reference content in over four million entries, collected from multiple sources. American Indian Search AIS allows American Indian businesses and groups, both small and large, an opportunity to list their group on a centralized web page. Best of the Web Human edited web directory that attempts to find and categorize, well, the best. Britannica Encyclopedia Britannica online. Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) Free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. Google Maps Mapquest Yahoo! Maps Maps and a variety of road and travel information. PubMed PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources. Scirus Free, comprehensive search of scientific information from journal and web sources. Social Science Research Network A website devoted to the promotion of scholarship in the fields of economics, finance, accounting, management and law. Papers and abstracts. ThomasNet Industry and company information, downloadable CAD drawings, industrial product release information, etc. USA.gov (aka firstgov.gov) A portal to everything in American government--laws and regulations, data and statistics, forms, libraries, and on and on. Wikipedia The online encyclopedia that "anyone can edit," has a tremendous range of articles and information. However, humorous or malicious postings can occasionally be found; not recommended for official citation. Wink People search engine (social search). Also searches aliases and screen names, social networking sites. WWW Virtual library The first index of Web content (1991), still a valuable directory full of high-quality sources of information and analysis. zoominfo People, companies and relationships in the business world. |
