The typical US resident is responsible for 21.1 metric tons (Mt) of CO2-equivalent emissions each year. Of this "carbon footprint," food and beverage products account for about 4 Mt, which amounts to roughly 19% of the total.
Moreover, of the 9.8 Mt that are emitted indirectly during the production and delivery of products and services, food and beverages represent a 40% share, more than any other type.

For climate conscious consumers who want to understand the GHGs embodied in the products they purchase, TCC has assembled a profile of how different classes of products contribute to the carbon footprint of the typical American consumer.
Of course, in order to directly compare products within the same sector, we need to do better than estimates, and so TCC is beta-testing our process-specific Climate ConsciousTM Assessment methodology on the products of several thought leaders in the consumer packaged goods industry. Assessed products demonstrating sufficiently low GHG intensity will be rated and endorsed with TCC's Climate ConsciousTM label. Learn more about the CC Assessment and metric here.
