Wednesday we used the awesome power of numbers to predict what Apple will drop on us on Monday. The power of maths has never been more appropriately utilized.

Today, we're checking with the experts to see what they have to say. But wait, aren't we the experts? Of course we are, we're sharing the spotlight here, we're cool that way.

We hassled asked some of our favorite tech journalists what they think will be announced on Monday, and this what they told us.


Leander Kahney - Cult of Mac

"WWDC will be all about the third-generation iPhone -- which will certainly have new hardware and new software. The new software we've already seen a sneak peek of -- but I expect there to be a couple of surprises in OS 3.0, especially if the new hardware has features like a forward-facing camera or digital compass. The new hardware is anyone's guess, but at the very least, we can expect a faster processor and a better camera with autofocus and video recording. I also expect there will be at least three models, ranging from 4GB to 32GB. And let's hope Steve Jobs makes an appearance. That would be sweet."


Brian X Chen - Wired

"I'm placing my bets on Apple announcing an incremental upgrade for the iPhone, which should include a digital compass, a faster processor and a video camera, among other changes. But the major news to look forward to is when exactly the iPhone 3.0 operating system will become available, because that's a more significant update for everyone, including current iPhone owners. iPhone developers tell me not to expect the OS to be ready for download until July, so at WWDC we'll likely only hear release dates for both iPhone 3.0 and the next-gen iPhone, since the next iPhone would presumably ship with the latest software."


Dan Moren - Macworld

"Come Monday morning, I anticipate the heavens parting, the sun coming out, and a wealth of new information imparted by Apple executives. Most of what they're going to talk about is a no-brainer: this is a developer event, after all, so expect discussion of Snow Leopard and iPhone OS 3.0. I think there are going to be some surprises for both of these, beyond what Apple's already told us, so I'll go out on a limb and say that for iPhone 3.0, it's going to be video-focused: recording, sharing, and possibly even video chat. On the other hand, Snow Leopard's going to be notable not for what they've added, but for what they're lacking: namely, a price tag. I don't think we'll see anything in the way of hidden features--perhaps the introduction of a new theme, but that's just window dressing--but I am betting that the 10.6 update will be free to all owners of Leopard. Oh, and expect Power PC users to have something to cry about when it turns out that there's no support for their aging hardware. Finally, no Apple show is complete without one more thing, and in this case I think it'll be the new iPhone everyone's talking about. Expect HSPA7.2 to be a big selling point, as well as a front-facing camera for video chat, slightly bumped hardware specs, and new capacity, but it probably won't ship until later this summer. But ultimately, none of this will matter a bit, since Steve Jobs won't be there to introduce it, and the stock will take a nosedive (only to recover later in the week)."


Roberto Baldwin - Mac|Life (Hey, I'm a smart guy, why can't I add my two cents?)

"This year's WWDC will be the stage at which the new iPhone Video / 3G V2 / 09 / Unicorn, or whatever the name will be, will be released. The newest iPhone we'll all be lining up for will have video capturing, editing, and possibly uploading. It's hard to imagine AT&T being cool with all those bits of data filling up their network. Then again, if anyone can talk AT&T into it, it's Apple.  The new iPhone will also get a faster processor and larger storage. If there isn't a 32GB iPhone available, I foresee a mini-riot in Moscone West. iPhone OS 3.0 won't be available until the release of the new iPhone in mid July. The rumored release date of July 17 sounds good, and I've already cleared my schedule for extreme line standing. Snow Leopard's release date will be announced. Phil will unveil a few more features for the developers to play with at the conference. I would hope Apple would learn from last year's MobileMe / iPhone 3G fiasco and release the update either before, or after, the iPhone release. I have my fingers crossed for a June release."


Walt Mossberg - Wall Street Journal

We figured Walt was already sitting in the front row at Moscone West in anticipation of Monday's Keynote. So instead of hassling the guy, we're just going to see what he said during his Palm Pre review. The guy can't help but name drop the iPhone during his review.

"Unfortunately for Palm, Apple has both a new iPhone operating system and new iPhone hardware coming, likely available within a month,"

He later adds;

"And, although Apple hasn't announced any new hardware features, I expect to see an iPhone with up to 32 gigabytes of memory, video recording, a higher-resolution camera, a compass, and greater operating speed. Plus, there are persistent rumors that Apple will announce at least one iPhone at a drastically lower price than $199."

Some on the Internet believe that Walt might already have a new iPhone in his possession. Walt and Pogue both had iPhones before the masses when the first version came out. Maybe Steve slipped him a new iPhone for old times' sake.
