MANGA PILOT FAQ

Where Do I Read the Manga Pilots?
All of the Pilots are listed under the "Featured Content" banner. Click on a Pilot's icon, and you'll be taken to that Pilot's own page, complete with its manga viewer and its ratings and reviews.

Why Create Such Short Manga Stories?
TOKYOPOP is looking for creators who can deliver tight, punchy, well-paced Pilots that entertain and introduce a new property. The primary task of a Manga Pilot is to captivate its audience with characters, concepts and worlds. A Manga Pilot may be the first chapter of a planned graphic novel, but it doesn’t have to be. A self-contained side story or a short story may be a better way to introduce the property.

Who Are the Manga Pilot Creators?
A Manga Pilot is not only a launchpad for new creators, but also a platform for established artists and writers to efficiently test response to their ideas. In fact, several well known graphic novel writers are taking part in the Manga Pilot program, because even they are excited about it.

One such writer is Tim Seeley, who has worked for Image and Devil's Due. He is the creator of the popular horror comic Hack/Slash, which was recently optioned for film. His Manga Pilot, The Cynic, will debut soon!

How Do I Comment on and Rate a Pilot?
You must be logged on to www.TOKYOPOP.com to comment and rate pilots. Once you've read a Manga Pilot, simply leave a detailed comment in the "Add Comment" box at the bottom of the page. You may also rate each Pilot based by clicking on the appropriate number of robofish in the red box on the left side of the page.

For the Pilot program to become a success, it's crucial that we get your feedback, so keep coming back to the site to read and review the latest pilots!

What’s Next for a Successful Pilot?
TOKYOPOP will select which Manga Pilots continue their creative evolution based on a combination of user feedback, editorial judgment and market opportunity. The next level of development could be a second Pilot installment. After that, the possibilities are broad and may go far beyond the Pilot, and may involve the creation of a full graphic novel.

A successful Manga Pilot may also find its first major incarnation in one or more different media. The nature of the property will indicate what it should first become—a book, a movie, a TV show, a game, a mobile manga, an iManga or any other medium.

Most importantly, YOU are the ones making and reading our manga—and we want to know what YOU think. Your reviews will help shape the future of each and every manga pilot.

What Are the Pilot Deal Terms?
If your work is selected for the Manga Pilot Program, we’ll offer you a standard TOKYOPOP Manga Pilot deal. Everyone gets the same offer. It’s a simple, new deal we created just for Manga Pilots.

Basically, we pay you a flat fee to make the Manga Pilot and let us display it online for feedback or publish it in Manga Magazine, anthology books, or as a preview in our other full-length manga books. You keep your copyright during a one-year Pilot review period. We have an exclusive option to offer you a shared-copyright deal for developing your Pilot into a full-length manga and/or other media projects. If we don’t make a deal, you still own the rights, and after the one year is up, you’ll be free to shop it around however you like. Feel free to discuss it in public and let us know what you think about it. It’s not supposed to be a secret. We did our best to make it simple, easy to understand and fair to you as well as to us.

Are There Any Manga Pilot Success Stories?
We fully expect many of our Manga Pilots to progress to full-length manga and/or other media.
Whenever a Manga Pilot creator inks a property deal with TOKYOPOP, we’ll let you know about it here. But before that happens, we need your feedback! So start reviewing and rating!

In the meantime, we do have some interesting news to report!
Hector Sevilla, one of our first Pilot creators, whose Manga Pilot DrawSkill will soon debut on this site, was just approved as one of the artists for TOKYOPOP's StarCraft: Frontline anthology. Go, Hector!

I'm a writer who wants to submit a pilot. Do I have to sign and submit a agreement pact? If not, then were would I go to submit my pilot?

Iam trying to become a American mangaka but which do I do? CAN I do both?

2008-09-04 16:57:14

can you enter both the rising stars of manga and the manga pilot?

When are we going to see the rest of the pilots? I worked with Reginald Ting (writer) in a 24 page manga that I submitted in March or so, and I keep seeing the same old pilots here. Unfortunately the editor we were working with was fired, now we don't know what's going on...

Thanks for your questions, guys. The Pilot program is not a competition like Rising Stars. Follow the submissions guidelines to show us your proposed Pilot. whenever you like. There's no deadline. If your idea is selected by the editors, we'll get back to you and offer you a Pilot contract. The link above called "Continue to Manga Pilots Submission Guidelines" is where to go to find out what and how to submit for consideration. http://www.tokyopop.com/Manga_Pilots/gopro/1543079.html

a few more questions im gonna post here, since the emails never did go through. one, is there a deadline? if so, when is it? and two- say that someone sends in one manga pilot, as half of a duo. can they submit one thats purely their own work, without the other half of the duo, as well?

I can see how pilots are of interest to TP - new properties, contemporary ideas. No publishing rights to negotiate.... But what about us traditionalists who would like to see more English translations of existing work from J-mangaka? I would love more Yun Kouga - and to see more work from the Hot Gimmick, Escaflowne, From Far Away, Red River, Skip Beat authors! Even one-shots! Throw us a bone!
