ZeniMax Buys id Software (1196 views, 34 comments)

News: eSports

After 19 years of independence, id Software has been acquired by the parent conpany of game publisher Bethesda Softworks, which is well known for its work on Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls series.

Bethesda Softworks is ironically enough also the publisher for Splash Damage's upcoming title Brink, which means the London based game studio is once again in close quarters with their mentors at id Software.

Quote: planetwolfenstein.com ZeniMax Media Inc., parent company of noted game publisher Bethesda Softworks, today announced it has completed the acquisition of legendary game studio, id Software, creators of world-renowned games such as DOOM, QUAKE, Wolfenstein, and its upcoming title, RAGE. The acquisition by ZeniMax Media joins together two of the finest, most respected videogame developers in the world, combining the first person shooter (FPS) expertise of id Software with acclaimed role playing game (RPG) developer Bethesda Game Studios – creators of the 2008 Game of the Year, Fallout 3, and the 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Bethesda Softworks will publish the titles of id Software other than upcoming releases previously committed to other publishers.

Founded in 1991, id Software established itself as an industry leader with some of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed video games of all time. id Software created the original first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D, and subsequently set new standards in the genre with the blockbuster releases of its DOOM and QUAKE titles. In addition, id Software developed cutting edge, proprietary technology with the id Tech engine which powers many notable FPS titles, and continues to make great advances in game technology under the direction of John Carmack, one of the country’s technology leaders and a member of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) Hall of Fame.

Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, commented on the transaction: “This was a unique opportunity to team with a smart, sophisticated publisher like Bethesda Softworks where the interests of the studio and the publisher will be fully aligned in the development and marketing of our titles. In addition, we will now have financial and business resources to support the future growth of id Software, a huge advantage which will result in more and even better games for our fans.”

id Software will continue to operate as a studio under the direction of its founder, John Carmack. No changes will be made in the operations of id Software in the development of its games. All the principals at id Software have signed long-term employment contracts, assuring they will continue in their roles developing games at the studio.

“This puts id Software in a wonderful position going forward,” said John Carmack, who will continue to serve in his current role as Technical Director. “We will now be able to grow and extend all of our franchises under one roof, leveraging our capabilities across multiple teams while enabling forward looking research to be done in the service of all of them. We will be bigger and stronger, as we recruit the best talent to help us build the landmark games of the future. As trite as it may be for me to say that I am extremely pleased and excited about this deal, I am."

Robert Altman, the founder, Chairman & CEO of ZeniMax Media stated, “We, along with many others, consider id Software to be among the finest game studios in the world, with extraordinary design, artistic and technical capabilities. They have demonstrated, repeatedly, that rare ability to create franchise properties that are critical and commercial successes. Our intention is to make sure id Software will continue to do what they do best – make AAA games. Our role will be to provide publisher support through Bethesda Softworks and give id Software the resources it needs to grow and expand.”

ZeniMax Media Inc, which is privately held, was founded in 1999 to create quality interactive entertainment products to meet the growing worldwide demand. The Company is headquartered in Rockville, MD and maintains offices in Hunt Valley, MD, London and Tokyo. Among its wholly owned subsidiaries are Bethesda Softworks, a premier publisher of video games, Vir2L Studios which develops games for the casual market, and ZeniMax Online Studios, a studio dedicated to massively multi-player online games (MMOG).

Bethesda Game Studios, the development group at ZeniMax Media, is one of the top video game studios in the world. Its most recent release, Fallout 3, was the 2008 winner of more than 60 Game of the Year awards, including The Associated Press, Official Xbox Magazine, Yahoo, PC Gamer, IGN, Game Critics Awards, Game Developer Choice Awards, and Gamespy. Bethesda also created the 2006 PC and Xbox 360 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and the 2002 PC and Xbox Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Bethesda Game Studios has created 2 of the 10 best games of all time, Fallout 3 and Oblivion, on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

Wolfenstein: the elder scrolls?
 DEATHBRINGER666 on 25/06/09, 09:12:16 GMT

my thoughts exactly :DDD
 Ethernet on 25/06/09, 09:31:26 GMT

ive never played elder scrolls but isnt it some supernatural thing ? some fantasy thing?
and isnt wolfenstein an supernatural game with nazi's?

That idea isn't too far fetched :p wolfenstein is almost there already
 xeoxis on 25/06/09, 09:37:15 GMT

Tele is joking and the elder scrolls are rpg's in the past with fantasy in it.
 Ethernet on 25/06/09, 09:41:47 GMT

i know :p

was just saying that its more likely to happen than you think

the worst thing that can happen from this is a 60 odd level WoW-style wolfenstein where its an eternal XP save across all servers and you have to pay monthly.

probably not for ET though :< but maybe for Wolfenstein :)))

Thats hugely disapointing, I loved id's independence. Interestingly though maybe 4 years ago ID tried to buy activision and now activision blizzard is the biggest publisher in the world and now ID is owned by someone else :(
Limbonic on 25/06/09, 13:13:17 GMT Edited

if it continues like that we'll have activision/blizzard and EA left in a few years. casual games all the way, yeah! however, how can someone not love bethesda? they'll just ship 1 multiplayer map with the retail version of wolfenstein and sell the others als DLC. that's going to be awesome!
 Chr1s on 25/06/09, 15:50:20 GMT

Yeah except Wolfenstein is being published by Activision.
 Sainted on 25/06/09, 13:22:38 GMT

Uh, if I recall correctly id was trying to get bought in by Activision back then, but not all of id Software's owners agreed to it, which led to Adrian Carmack quitting the company:

Quote Adrian Carmack left id Software in 2005. At the time the press was told he felt he had done all he could do in the gaming field and was planning to pursue his passions of art. However, in September 2005, the Wall Street Journal revealed he was taking his former business partners to court claiming he was effectively fired by them in an attempt to force him to sell his 41% stake in the company for $11 million under the terms of a contract he wants the court to nullify. $11 million is thought to be a fraction of the true value of his stake, which is thought to be closer to $43 million after the company received a $105 million bid from Activision in 2004.

I stand corrected!
Ankel on 25/06/09, 13:32:04 GMT Edited

According to id, this move should give them more indepedence, at least in the creative department:
Quote "We're not going to change the kinds of games we make…. It allows us to accelerate the growth of our internal studios, so we can focus on making all of our internal games as opposed to working with external partners where there has been a step down in quality… There will be more, better games from id. So if you're a fan of the company, then it is all upside and all things to look forward to." Todd Hollenshead

Might just be propaganda af course :)

more quakecon prizemoney!
 Sainted on 25/06/09, 13:44:43 GMT

Everything id owns is now owned by ZeniMax, games, licenses, human resources, all the extra games they will be able to produce will be fully owned by ZeniMax. I mean, even id's independence itself is owned by ZeniMax :P
 Ankel on 25/06/09, 14:12:11 GMT

That doesn't default to ZeniMax interfering :)
 h3ll on 25/06/09, 16:17:13 GMT

no true, but at the end they can still say 'its sucks, go fix something else' right??

and first ID were on their own, how can they be more independent with, than without zenimax? :/
 jeje on 25/06/09, 15:38:21 GMT

I've read that they wanted to make more title and to be free. For now they don't have to defend all their project to have money for publishing their game. As we can see RtCW is from 2k1 and another single player chapter is only coming now..

The future will tell us if it's a good news or not.

is this good or bad for iD ?
 Sainted on 25/06/09, 15:34:15 GMT

Good for the id owners at least, they just made a lot of money :)
 chosen on 26/06/09, 14:50:43 GMT

buying something during financial crisis? Rather seems like a cheap offer before knock out to me
 Sainted on 26/06/09, 17:00:23 GMT

if the offer was really cheap id would have just sold their IP's instead, I bet a company like Activision would pay millions to be able to be the full owner of franchises like Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake.
 chosen on 26/06/09, 18:06:16 GMT

there's no oldschool left, it's all about new school, so tell me some successful titles released, I only remember quake4 many said it's shit (though i liked it), quakewars was related to id aswell and didn't bring in much money did it?
 Sainted on 26/06/09, 19:38:34 GMT

Doom 3 was id's latest big inhouse title and was sold over 3.5 million times

In 2004 Activision actually bid 90 million dollars for the exclusive rights to the Quake, Doom and Wolfenstein franchies, true, that is five years ago, but even if the franchises would be sold for just a quarter of that amount, it would still be a lot of money.

I don't think ET:QW infected the worth of the Quake IP, considering it was both highly rated and had okayish sales numbers
 chosen on 26/06/09, 19:50:00 GMT

I dont disagree about the great names, but looking at their announcement before quakelive, they said they won't release another quake if it isnt any success, and success = sponsors for this game.

After doom was released, same for quake, what did you hear about their multiplayer performance and fans? I don't remember much positive :(

id has become the same as blizzard, from their top support for competitive games, they were focusing cashual games and struggled with patch releases for wc3 in the past years. the name is falling down and with selling it, it doesn't look good for the competitive gaming's future :(
 zeni on 25/06/09, 17:06:33 GMT

"They are triple A, top-of-the-line in what they do in the RPGs. And they have no overlap with all the things we do in the FPSes."

So I guess we will get screwed after all :l
even if it wasnt going to look like RtCW in the first place.
 zeni  on 25/06/09, 17:03:36 GMT

I bought it, sorry guys.. I wanted to make sure it will be the same as RtCW
 beggin on 25/06/09, 18:13:04 GMT

You just wasted your money. You should have bought Endrant Studios :D
