After 19 years of independence, id Software has been acquired by the parent conpany of game publisher Bethesda Softworks, which is well known for its work on Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls series.
Bethesda Softworks is ironically enough also the publisher for Splash Damage's upcoming title Brink, which means the London based game studio is once again in close quarters with their mentors at id Software.
Article, wich has comments from id’s John Carmack, Todd Hollenshead and ZeniMax CEO Robert Altman on this hot topic.(url)
was just saying that its more likely to happen than you think
the worst thing that can happen from this is a 60 odd level WoW-style wolfenstein where its an eternal XP save across all servers and you have to pay monthly.
Thats hugely disapointing, I loved id's independence. Interestingly though maybe 4 years ago ID tried to buy activision and now activision blizzard is the biggest publisher in the world and now ID is owned by someone else :(
if it continues like that we'll have activision/blizzard and EA left in a few years. casual games all the way, yeah! however, how can someone not love bethesda? they'll just ship 1 multiplayer map with the retail version of wolfenstein and sell the others als DLC. that's going to be awesome!
Uh, if I recall correctly id was trying to get bought in by Activision back then, but not all of id Software's owners agreed to it, which led to Adrian Carmack quitting the company:
Everything id owns is now owned by ZeniMax, games, licenses, human resources, all the extra games they will be able to produce will be fully owned by ZeniMax. I mean, even id's independence itself is owned by ZeniMax :P
I've read that they wanted to make more title and to be free. For now they don't have to defend all their project to have money for publishing their game. As we can see RtCW is from 2k1 and another single player chapter is only coming now..
The future will tell us if it's a good news or not.
if the offer was really cheap id would have just sold their IP's instead, I bet a company like Activision would pay millions to be able to be the full owner of franchises like Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake.
there's no oldschool left, it's all about new school, so tell me some successful titles released, I only remember quake4 many said it's shit (though i liked it), quakewars was related to id aswell and didn't bring in much money did it?
Doom 3 was id's latest big inhouse title and was sold over 3.5 million times
In 2004 Activision actually bid 90 million dollars for the exclusive rights to the Quake, Doom and Wolfenstein franchies, true, that is five years ago, but even if the franchises would be sold for just a quarter of that amount, it would still be a lot of money.
I don't think ET:QW infected the worth of the Quake IP, considering it was both highly rated and had okayish sales numbers
I dont disagree about the great names, but looking at their announcement before quakelive, they said they won't release another quake if it isnt any success, and success = sponsors for this game.
After doom was released, same for quake, what did you hear about their multiplayer performance and fans? I don't remember much positive :(
id has become the same as blizzard, from their top support for competitive games, they were focusing cashual games and struggled with patch releases for wc3 in the past years. the name is falling down and with selling it, it doesn't look good for the competitive gaming's future :(
