Roger's Recon Hunt Solved!

Posted by urk at 7/7/2009 3:08 PM PDT

Solution inside.

If you've been racking your brain trying to come up with a solution to Roger's Recon Hunt to no avail, you can go ahead and relax - the contest is over.  If you sent along the correct solution through the proper channels, you can expect to be hearing from us soon.  We'll keep you updated.

In the meantime, here's the scoop on the solution, straight from Roger (who is apparently not doing a great job of being on vacation).

"I hope everyone had fun tackling the Halo puzzle for Bungie Day. If you didn't finish it, here's a walk-through:

In the video, Caboose said that The Alien will be carrying the flag and trying to communicate with each player before shooting them. The kill timeline at the bottom of the picture shows that Church was the first victim. Start by clicking "objective path: Next" above the image to show the first flag route, then click Church's name at the left to see the kill vector. The puzzle is: what would that flag squiggle look like, *from Church's perspective*? "Un"fortunately, none of the camera angles at the bottom is from exactly the right place, but by using a few of them and visualizing the 3-D flag path, you can see that the distortions in the squiggle would disappear when viewed from the exact right place. To Church, it's a perfectly-written word. Repeat this process for each player/flag-path, and you'll come up with the phrase, "NOT BRUTE OR HUMAN, TO POE".

After the first four words, you're probably thinking that it's Halo-related, huh? Nope. The last two words tell you to think in context of [Edgar Allan] Poe, whose poem The Bells has the line: "They are neither brute nor human-- / They are Ghouls". So GHOULS is the right answer. (we'd accept GHOUL, too.)

Incidentally, this clue phrase comes from an Isaac Asimov short mystery in the Black Widowers series, called "Neither Brute nor Human". The Halo-themed red herring seemed too good to pass up."

Thanks for playing.

"What’s July 7th to everyone else is Bungie Day to us. The day we celebrate our favorite developer, their games, and this crazy thing we call our community. As we focus on the mutual fascination of the magical number seven, today we say thank you to those slaving away at the Studio. We say thank you for the games, for the numerous interactions, and for taking care of our moms. Yes, we appreciate it. While you keep her on her back, it keeps her off ours! So this one’s for you Bungie. Much love, Your Community."

Bungie Vs. The World Scoreboard

Posted by urk at 7/7/2009 9:28 AM PDT

Check out all the Carnage.

As of this writing there are approximately 120,000 182,000+ players in the Bungie Vs. The World Playlist, a dozen empty bottles of liquor left over from our late night match ups, and plenty more games to go throughout the rest of the day.

If you want to know how much (or how little) ass we've been kicking, you can check out the scoreboard via our webcams.

Bungie Webcams

Current Carnage

Bungie (Us) - 47

World (You) - 61

Ties - 10

We'll break away from the festivities to update this article a few times over the course of the day, so check back to see just how much Recon we end up giving away.  And of course, if you don't happen to run into our squads, you still have a shot via one of several super secret methods.  Thanks for playing with us!

Roger's Recon Hunt

Posted by urk at 7/7/2009 9:02 AM PDT

How about a nice game of Tag?

Since we know not everyone has access to an Xbox 360 for Bungie Day, Roger thought it would be cool to run a Bungie.net contest for Recon. If you were planning on spending the rest of the day wallowing in your own terrible misery while everyone else jumped into Halo 3’s Matchmaking for their shot at Recon, it’s time to dry those tears and get focused - iIt’s puzzle time.

Roger as "Outermage." Costume design: K. Thaler

Here’s the details, straight from the Wolf himself:

Hi everyone,

It's Bungie Day, and I feel like handing out some Recon. So let me tell you a story...

There's a cool event that happens every year or so at Microsoft called Puzzlehunt. Teams of a dozen, many of whom work at Microsoft, spend an entire weekend without sleep solving puzzles created by that year's hosts, fitting into a theme. Two years ago (when we were still at Microsoft), the team hosting Puzzlehunt 11 invited me to join them in writing game-themed puzzles. How could I resist coding a puzzle into the stats result of a made-up game of Halo 2? What's more, the guys at RvB were about to stop by for an early look at Halo 3, so I whipped up a quick script and asked if they'd perform and record it. They were happy to, and it became the intro to this puzzle.

The puzzle been sitting, hidden, on Bungie.net for almost two years since then, so just for fun, we'll let you take a crack at it for a chance to win Recon. Be warned: it's not at all easy, since it's meant to be a challenge to the types of people in and around Microsoft who spend a weekend each year solving puzzles for 36 hours straight. But it is solvable, since most of the teams got it.
Keep reading to see how you can get Recon.

The theme for this Puzzlehunt was Tron - teams were zapped into the computer by an evil program, and had to solve puzzles to do battle with him, and eventually escape with the help of friendly video game programs they'd meet along the way. This video introduced the Halo puzzle:

Red vs. Blue: How About a Nice Game of Tag?

Players were then directed to this page, which is the puzzle itself. You don't need to navigate away from this page to solve it. Just click the links that change what you see in the main image.

Want to play for recon? We've set up a Bungie.net account to receive your answer. Simply send a Bungie.net private message to this user with your answer as the subject. The answer is a single word. We'll search through the PMs and give Recon to the first five correct answers who we deem to be provided by legitimate solvers (so don't write a script to submit a word list! And we'll check for answers automatically, so be sure to spell correctly.) We’ll also pull a couple of random users with the correct answer out of the pile too, so if you don’t get it right away, keep at it until you have it solved.

Employees of Bungie or Microsoft, participants in Puzzlehunt 11, or others who have had similar exposure to the correct answer, are not eligible. Players who post the puzzle answer to our public forums, share it via PM, or otherwise distribute the answer will be banned from both winning Recon and from Bungie.net. Plus, they’ll only be hurting their own chances by adding more players to the random drawing.  Oh, and there's a discussion thread attached to this article.  Please use it.

Happy Hunting.

Bungie Day Is On Approach

Posted by urk at 7/6/2009 4:01 PM PDT

And requesting a flyby.

Whaddaya know, tomorrow is Bungie Day.  Came up fast didn't it?  How the time flies.

Since you're so stinkin' awesome, we're planning on packing Bungie.net with a whole pile of great content for you to check out tomorrow.  Maybe (just maybe) we'll have some brand-new screenshots of some stuff you've never seen, another puzzling way for you to win Recon, a battle-tested beta feature becoming publicly available, and some sonorous words to cast your way.  You should definitely Stay Tuned.

On the Halo 3 front, we've got a whole mess of Bungie employees signed up to square off against you in the Bungie Vs. The World Playlist. We've filled the 24-hour hopper with community-crafted maps and set it to go live tomorrow at the wee hour of 1:00AM PDT.  Set your alarm clock - if you're wide awake and physical and find yourself facing down four flaming heads in the lobby tomorrow, you'll want to buck up and play your best because Recon armor will be on the line.  Pull out a victory against one of our four-player teams and you'll be one of the few that gets to rock Recon before Halo 3: ODST ships in September.

Wanna see who you'll be playing against should you get the luck of the draw and run into four flaming heads?  Scroll.

So, just how do you get your fancy new duds?  Well, first let's explore a couple of ways in which you won't: you won't have to give us any of your personal information and you won't have to join a custom game or indulge in any wacky Internet shenanigans to claim your prize.  In fact, just ignore anyone offering to give you Recon via any method.  They're jerks.  Jerks who are trying to trick you.

When you run into our crew, you'll know it.  They'll have the Bungie nameplate visible from the lobby and their friggin' heads will be on fire in-game.

The ways in which you can earn Recon through this Bungie Day event are pretty straight forward.  Simply defeat one of the four-player squads you see listed above in the one-day-only Bungie Vs. The World Playlist or trigger some special metrics that we're not going to tell you about until after the competition is over and done with.  A few days after 07/07, once we have everything in order, we'll tell everyone to check their armor permutations for Recon.  Once the Internet recovers from the mass outage, you'll be able to sign-in and see if you've won.

Again, we won't ask you for passwords or personal information, and we don't need a thing from you to enable Recon.  Just play and have fun.  We'll take care of the rest.

Make sure you're ready to go when the Playlist goes live at 1:00AM PDT, and check back in with us at Bungie.net all throughout the day tomorrow for more information.  Even if you find yourself sans Xbox 360 or stuck at the office, we should have plenty on hand to keep you in a celebratory mood.

See you suckers in matchmaking.

Bungie day, the only day of the year that gives Santa Claus a run for his money, is quickly approaching. Last year we celebrated the magical seven-filled date with a colossal compilation of thank yous that included words, words, and more words. This year it’s all about the image and that wonderful number that follows six and precedes eight.

To be included in this year’s special community article that will be published on 07.07.09, send your contribution (or questions) to hawtymcbloggy [at] gmail [dot] com. Submissions should be of the image or video variety and must somehow include the number seven. Maybe you can create a gorgeous piece of Forge art crafting the number seven out of a variety of weapons. Maybe you can send a link to a short YouTube clip featuring your first Killimanjaro. Maybe you can open up your Paint program and draw something Mister Chief-ish. Maybe you can prove your Photoshop prowess with an image that is simply beyond stunning. The only requirement is that it celebrates Halo and seven is somehow involved. Submissions (including your gamertag for credit purposes) should reach my inbox by the 6th. Community Cartographers - Tartarus

Posted by urk at 7/2/2009 11:28 AM PDT

Works every time and looks freakin' sweet to boot.

For the second week of our Community Cartographer series, Sikamikanico steps in to tell us all about his Forged Sandbox space, Tartarus.  If you're still looking for great community-crafted content to check out for your Custom Games night, you should definitely add this one to the roster.  But before you do, take a few minutes to dig into the building process, straight from the map's creator.

Map Variant: Tartarus

Q. What’s the core concept behind Tartarus?

A. Putting aside the obvious homage to everyone's favourite evil Brute Chieftain, I wanted to create a fast paced, action packed arena map. In my humble opinion, the one thing I find Halo 3 to lack is smaller arena maps – so this my little attempt to fill that gap. I wanted something that played well with either AR or BR start, and still celebrated the wonderful variety of weapons that Halo 3 employs. The one thing that sets this map apart from most is the options available to the player for movement. I love those Man-Cannons and little jumps to get around!

Q. What gametypes should players looking for options on your map check out?

A. I’ve managed to Forge Tartarus with all gametypes in mind, but it plays best with Team Slayer, Team KOTH and Team Oddball in my opinion. It’s pretty sweet for SWAT and Snipers too, and you can find especially created variants for those gametypes in my File Share.

Q. Is this your first crack at Tartarus or have you been working at it for quite some time?

A. Believe it or not, this was the 30th iteration of Tartarus! I had a lot of help and feedback from a variety of players of all skill levels, and it all helped. The map wouldn’t be as good as it is without their honest feedback and suggestions. I’m pretty sure they began to hate me after playing nothing but this map for days on end, but they all rock regardless.

Q. So, what worked from day one and what needed tweaking?

A. The central area and surrounding walkways haven’t really changed since the map was started. The biggest changes were made to the bases and the Overshield and Active Camo spawns – one of my pals in particular commented that getting around just didn’t feel right in that area, and that it took to long to get back up on top – so after a lot of thinking, the Man-Cannons were brought in to help the player get out of trouble. The bases also saw a roof added to prevent base to base grenade spamming, as well as a nifty little prison bar section straight out of Sidewinder to house the Regenerator, which can be grabbed from either side. (Thanks Ash!)

Q. What was the most difficult element to get right?

A. Without a doubt, the Man-Cannons. I’m sure most Forgers can tell you, the Man-Cannon doesn’t always send you where you want it to send you. It all depends on so many factors – if you walk or jump in, walk backwards, or sideways – it can all make a difference to where you end up. It took almost a day to get the design quite right for them, and I’m pleased to say after plenty of testing, they just work – every time. That and they look freakin’ sweet to boot.

Q. What drives you to spend so much time with the Forge?

A. Seeing people having fun on something you’ve made is an awesome feeling. That, and I find Forge weirdly therapeutic. As my friends can attest to, I spend literally hours in there just trying different things out. I’m currently trying out the Sky Bubble, but it’s very different to most other workable areas – it’s taking a little getting used to.

Q. Advice for anyone looking to get used to the Forge and build their own therapeutic map? Wanna make some shout-outs?

A. Hmm. On the advice front – when it comes to maps, in my opinion it’s all about flow. You need to give your players reasons to move, advantages to get to and hold, and above all, a fun environment to play in. I always work to that ethos, and it hasn’t let me down yet!

It would be totally wrong if I didn’t take advantage to shout out to some of my pals, so first of, special thanks to KingBartlett for being my Forge comrade in arms, and Vinnie13, Mini Waz and ash 55 for all map advice and suggestions! Secondly, big thanks to the cool folks in OMG (Check them out if you live in Europe people!), Halo 3 in the Work Place, and Atlas/Test Pilot. I’m sorry I made you play this map so much, but you know it was worth it! And lastly, thanks to the guys at Bungie for making Halo 3 of course.

"Final Cut" - Fly-through Video

Thanks to Sikamikanico for dropping the knowledge.  If you've come this far with is, reward yourself by scrolling back up to the top and downloading Tartarus - you done good.  After giving it a good spin, make sure to drop back into the discussion thread attached to this interview and let the mapmaker know how much ass it kicks.

Summer Mythic Recon Challenge IV

Posted by urk at 7/2/2009 11:26 AM PDT

Let the fireworks fly...after you've read the rules.

So you've weathered The Storm with Mythic proportions. You've tasted the bitter blood of Covenant scum. Are you ready to take your game to the next level? Are you ready to put those mad skillz to the test with your Hog driving? We're backtracking outside of void and dropping right smack in the middle of the road to Recon. No, really!

Tsavo Highway is on this list this week. By now you should know the drill. If not, have yet another gander at THE RULES, and it should paint a decent picture for you. Beat the mission on solo Mythic (Legendary, all 13 skulls activated, FFA scoring) starting tonight at midnight for a shot at Recon. Though you won't have the uber Arbiter to lend you a helping hand this time around, you'll have plenty of goodies at your disposal to help you tango with the legions of Choppers, Wraiths, and temperamental War Chieftains that now the ruins of this ancient roadway.

Don't worry, though. We've got you covered. Check out the HBO Walkthrough for extensive tips and tricks as well as the newly written 2.0 guide for alternate routes on how to tackle this mission.

Also, a few additional pointers just to give you a helping hand:

1) Please title your film "Mythic Tsavo".
2) When you send me a private message on Bungie.net with your entry, please title the message "SMRC: Tsavo Highway".
3) Be sure to hyperlink your entry. Use the following format: insertfilmaddresshere
4) Please do NOT private message me on either here or Xbox Live asking questions about the contest. All questions about the contest should be asked in Urk's thread here. All questions about Mythic Difficulty itself should be asked in the main thread here. No Friend Requests either, please...
5) Please only submit ONE entry. Double check your work beforehand so you don't have to worry about submitting it incorrectly. It's not a rush. You have a full week to do this.
6) Please do not ask me whether or not I have received your entry. Have faith in the system. If you sent it, I got it.

Having that all said and done, have fun this week, and let the fireworks fly on Tsavo Highway!

Okay, so we're still a few days away from the 4th of July. That's cool.  Let's start the celebration early.  Go ahead and fire up your copy of Halo 3 and jump into this week's Double EXP Weekend Playlist.  If you're underage, make sure you have some adult supervision - we wouldn't want you to lose a finger because you pointed that Laser the wrong way.

4th of July is a 5v5 playlist featuring primarily Flag gametypes, with a splash of Rocket/Splaser Slayer and VIP. Available from 11am today until 2am Monday. Requires Heroic, Legendary and Mythic.

Additionally, you can submit news to Bungie. All that's required is a Bungie.net account. We will review your submission and if it is worthy we'll add it to our blog.
