Welcome to Meissen

As a Lord Mayor of Meissen, the heart of Saxony, I would like to welcome you and invite you to at least explore our historical town with your mouse, keyboard and a monitor.

Whoever visits the more than 1000 year old town Meissen, does not only expect the first European Porcelain manufacture, but also the historical scenery where a ghost of the past still can be felt.

Besides the precious porcelain, created by Boettger, with the world’s famous blue badge of two swords, the porcelain chimes of the church of our Lady, the Albrechtsburg with the cathedral, which you can see in the picture, and our historical town hall with its impressive market of old renaissance buildings, make this scenery unique.

On the steep slopes of the Elbe valley lays the smallest vineyard in Germany where the grapevine ripens, which is used for producing the distinctive Meissen wine.

A lot of tourist love to visit our culture festivals in the Meissen Theatre – "Pianoforte-Festspiele" and "Meißner Musik Marathon", as well as annual festivities – Pottery fair, Vintage and Meissen Christmas.

Recently there were several schools opened in Meissen, not only elementary schools, but also a few secondary schools (seminaries, health school, euro-school, training college). In our town was also built the Institute of Saxony Public Administration (FHSV Meissen). Meissen makes now an effort on ceramic industry expansion and town conception development as a region of health since the area of Elbe valley in Meissen near Dresden can provide the ideal living conditions.

I hope this virtual town excursion inspired you and I would love to welcome you as a real guest to our town.

Yours truly,

Olaf Raschke
Lord Mayor of Meissen
