The Metroschifter - Carbonistas
Scott Heisel on 8/26/09 @ 7:00 AM

[3.5/5]

It seemed inconceivable that a new Metroschifter album would appear in 2009. But leave it to Louisville, Kentucky's enfant terrible Scott Ritcher to resurrect this local legend. What's more surprising is that the band (this time including long-term bassist Pat McClimans and drummer Chris Reinstatler) explore a maddening array of musical genres on their sixth full-length. While treading the familiar dense, melodic-rock terrain of their past, the Metroschifter dabble in electronics, hip-hop and acoustic-guitar-fueled country. They jam samples and jarring breaks into some songs, most daringly on "America Is A Prison." No song in the band's back catalog approximates the sheer audacity of it. Keyboard and electronic beats begin the tune with crudely inserted samples; a solid beat commences with thick guitar chords; a disorienting stop-start section follows, with the entire mix of the song stopping and starting in unison. It's difficult to describe and even more difficult to determine if this is the shape of rock to come or a tragic misstep on the Metroschifter's part. Either way, they've managed to create a confounding record that demands undivided attention. (NOISE POLLUTION) Casey Boland
