FILE UNDER: Scream therapy

Ruiner - Hell Is Empty

[4/5]

Hell Is Empty starts off with a kind of unhinged, Bad Brains-esque chaos that immediately puts this Baltimore-based band into the upper echelon of modern hardcore, albeit among sparse company. This kind of heart-on-sleeve emotional punk rock has gone back to where it belongs--the underground, and bands like Ruiner are thrilled to be creating music without any preconceptions, barriers, or back-scratch sponsorships from chain stores. To that end, these tunes have snarl 'n' cuss, and don't buy into any conventions of popular music, instead focusing on impassioned, voice-cracking screams, distorted bass intros that lead into extended sung-spoke sonnets, and enough spazz sections to choke out a gaggle of emo bands. The tandem of "Part One" and "Part Two" is especially harrowing. Those who remember the classic '90s D.C. hardcore band Swiz, or their brother band, Sweetbelly Freakdown, will get a distinct sense of déjà vu. But only in the best possible way.
