The first known portrait of the celebrated singer Sophie Arnould (1740-1802), one of the most captivating and influential women of her times, was painted by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) with the title Portrait of a Lady, called Sophie Arnould.
The singers and actresses of the eighteenth century played a significant role in society, and Sophie was well able to use her intelligence to consolidate her fame and amass considerable wealth.
Sophie Arnould had the good fortune and privilege to create roles in some of Gluck’s most important operas, such as Iphigénie en Aulide, as a result of which her name is associated with the idea of new and fresh directions in opera.
This portrait, painted in 1773, is to be found in the Wallace Collection in London. |
