The cover of this issue is one of the most attractive portraits by one of the most important portrait artists of the sixteenth century. Agnolo Bronzino –Il Bronzino– (1503-1572) painted Eleonora of Toledo and Her Son Giovanni in 1550.
Bronzino’s career quickly evolved towards Mannerism, and his style is both cool and elegant, a style that fascinated painters of German and Italian magic realism from the period between the First and Second World Wars.
Eleonora de Toledo y Su Hijo is conserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, but another copy of the painting, perhaps by Bronzino himself, was restored and authenticated several years ago and is exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
