One of the great works of Romanesque painting graces the cover of our magazine this month. It depicts a shepherd playing a flageolet, part of the Annunciation to the Shepherds scene that plays out on the vaults of the Pantheon of the Kings at the Collegiate Church of San Isidro, located in Leon, Spain.
This royal pantheon painted in the 12th century is known as the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art, a title that befits this unique work that marks a pinnacle of medieval art.
