Gracing the cover of this edition is Doña Bárbara de Braganza (1711-1758), queen of Spain from 1746 to 1758 as wife of Fernando VI. Doña Bárbara – she was baptized with the mouthful-of-a-name María Magdalena Bárbara Xavier Leonor Teresa Antonia Josefa de Braganza – was the daughter of Juan V of Portugal and María Ana of Austria, and a cultured woman who spoke six languages and enjoyed music and the harpsichord lessons she received from Domenico Scarlatti. |
