BACH SACRED CANTATAS, by BRIAN ROBINS

Hyacinthe Rigaud, whose original name was Jacinto Rigau y Ros, was born in Perpignan in 1659 and died in Paris in 1743. He was thus a contemporary of the great François Couperin (1668-1733). Both artists spent much of their life working at the court of Louis XIV, where Rigaud was a sought-after portrait painter. The Young Black Servant in the Fine Arts Museum of Dunkerque, painted around 1710, is a special portrait. This is not a painting of a king, a nobleman, an ambassador, a prince or marshal of France, but of a black servant. But whose servant? Who had their servant painted in this way? We just don’t know.
