Giambattista Tiepolo was born in Venice in March 1696 and died in Madrid in March of 1770. For nearly 50 years he was a contemporary of his countryman Antonio Vivaldi, who was born in Venice in March of 1678 and died in Vienna July of 1741. The illustration on the cover, painted around 1755, hangs in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (Barcelona). It depicts either Euterpe, the pagan muse of music, or Saint Cecilia, Christianity’s patron saint of music. Pagan or Christian, the incarnation of music is seen seated at the harpsichord; she pauses for a moment and looks upward, as if seeking inspiration. |
