This is the son of King Charles I of England. As depicted here he is around seven years old, standing and armed, with a pistol in his right hand; his left hand rests on a plumed helmet. He was born in London in 1630 and ruled as Charles II from 1660 to 1685. During the final eight years of his reign, Henry Purcell was one of his court composers. The original of this portrait, painted by Anton van Dyck, is housed in Windsor Castle. Some authorities ascribe this copy of the portrait to be the work of Van Dyck himself, while others believe it is a copy from the painter’s workshop. From 1666 it hung in the Madrid Alcázar, the royal palace, and these days it can be seen at the Prado Museum. |
