This is the first time our cover features the figure of a musician playing the flute. And we wanted it to be a child, a young musician practising the flute. Was he an amateur musician? Or perhaps a music student? In any case he must have been a promise for the future. The painting is by the Dutch artist Judith Leyster (1609-1660). A specialist in portraits and genre scenes, initially influenced by Caravaggio, after 1636 she changed her style to concentrate on scenes depicting local customs using small figures and greyish tones. |
